Celebrate foliage color and most particularly the wonderful variegations, dapplings, and striations they offer. This is one of our new favorites: the gorgeous variegated Davidia Little Miss Sunshine, a purchase from one of our favorite nurseries Broken Arrow. Sublime foliage plus those heavenly hankerchief blossoms make this a true winner. #variegated #foliage #davidia #littlemisssunshine @hortulusfarm @thegardenconservancy @americasgardencapital

Two infusions down and Jack seems to be responding well. He’s finally able have a bit of solid food, which Is immense, spent a few hours catching some sun on the porch yesterday, and even went for a short walk. Of course, the chemo does come with its little battery of odd side effects and his hips and thigh muscles have been screaming. However, they say the second day after treatment is always the worst, so he should be better today. In any case, it’sy lovely that he’s sitting up and taking nourishment. Do send some healing thoughts his way! #makingprogress #betterandbetter #everyday #abitofsun #nourishment #healingthoughts @hortulusfarm @thegardenconservancy @americasgardencapital

Focal points. They add balance and material juxtaposition and definition to what could be just an unfocused if lovely sector of your garden. What is important here is scale and appropriateness. Our case in point today is the classical statue of Bacchus hoisting his dish of wine in the middle of the Bluebell Lake on the south side of the Woodland Walk. This large 40’ by 70’ oval is planted entirely with Hyacinthoides hispanica with a few pops of peach colored azaleas, these fo...llowed in fall with a carpeting of ground orchid. Bacchus not only adds height and focus but an almost human element to this scheme. As well, the addition of a formal statement here bolsters our credo to marry the rural with classic garden theory in the most casual, spontaneous way. Just another of the tips you’ll find in our new book CHASING EDEN. #formal #informal #focalpoint #gardentheory #amarriagemadeinheaven @hortulusfarm @thegardenconservancy @americasgardencapital @timberpress See more

Thoughtful transition. When you live on 100 rural acres of some lawn but, mainly, woods and meadow, the key is how to move seamlessly from the formal gesture to the general native unruliness. Here we are transitioning from the terraces below the house to lawn, then Fire Creek, then the wooded flank opposite. Behind the antique bird feeder, which adds just a dot of formality to the lawn, one can glimpse the post and rail of the horse’s pasture and the some of the really massiv...e, mature trees that surround us. On the lower terrace, one can glimpse the decidedly formal statement of variegated solanums in their Versailles boxes underplanted with blue plumbago. Soft transition is achieved by planting below the terrace wall with clouds and balls of box and shrub roses with a blowzy skirt of cotoneaster giving onto the lawn. Gently does it is the key. #transition #effortless #gentle #thoughtful #formal #informal #rural #easydoesit @hortulusfarm @thegardenconservancy @americasgardencapital See more
