Here is an update on our project at the Detwiler Park Nature Trail. The forest mulcher is removing the invasive privet shrubs from the area so that we can plan...t native hardwood trees and shrubs that support wildlife. We plan to restore this area with oak, maple, hickory, tulip poplar, edlerberry, and more! The goal for this area is to create a healthy forest, capable of regeneration and of supporting wildlife. Invasive species, like privet, Japanese barberry, and multiflora rose do not offer wildlife value and choke out new seedlings that are needed for regenerating the forest. Thank you to the Huntingdon Community Center for their partnership on this project, as well as the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service for their forestry expertise, and the Pennsylvania Interfaith Power & Light organization (Greg Williams!) for their countless volunteer hours and leadership!

In case you didn't see Saturday's The Daily News, the HCCD is excited to announce that we received a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and ...Natural Resources to complete a 13.4-acre buffer project at the Huntingdon Community Center's Detwiler Nature Trail along Standing Stone Creek! The first part of this project is to remove invasive species from the area. Invasive removal work is scheduled to begin this month, so keep an eye out for large equipment in this area! Once the invasive species are under control, we will implement the second part of this project in 2021, which entails planting a variety of native trees and shrubs. This will improve wildlife habitat and stream quality, as well as restore a natural aesthetic to the landscape. Questions or concerns? Contact the HCCD office at (814) 627-1626.

With the children's safety foremost and to comply with PA Department of Health (DOH) guidelines, we are unable to allow spectators at indoor practices and games. The games will be live streamed so that family and friends can watch the players in action. We understand this is disappointing but the safety and health of everyone involved is our first priority. We will follow the DOH regulations closely and if the guidelines change we will re-evaluate allowing spectators.
