As this Memorial Day comes to a close, I am thankful for those that sacrificed their lives so that I, and all Americans, could enjoy the holiday. Those that made the ultimate sacrifice did so in defense of the freedoms guaranteed by the United States Constitution. That constitution is the foundation of the American government, and its justice system, my professional home. So when I return to my law practice tomorrow I will be thankful as well. I am humbled and honored to be a... part of something that those I never knew died to protect and defend. Remember them tonight; remember them tomorrow. Do your part every day, as Abraham Lincoln directed, to " ... highly resolve that [those] dead shall not have died in vainthat this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedomand that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Today, we honor those that thought the idea of America was worthy of their lives. They died ... to form a more perfect Union. They died to establish Justice. They died to ... promote the general Welfare. They died to secure the Blessings of Liberty. A day is not enough to thank them. My lifetime and yours are not enough to honor their deaths. Words are not enough to give meaning to their sacrifice. But their sacrifice means we are free to try. Their deaths were for th...e imperfect America they knew; but they were also to make sure we, the living, the beneficiaries of their selflessness, had a chance to make America better. To make an America they hoped would someday be. As we debate, whether it be about race, gender, religion, politics, honor them by the manner in which you do so. Honor their deaths by doing so with dignity and respect for others. Those estimated 1.3 million that have died for America deserve so much more, but we should give them at least that. #MemorialDay #AlwaysRemember See more
