Paramore frontwoman and pop/punk pioneer Hayley Williams treks out on her own for her solo pop debut Petals For Armor. It doesn't break new ground it but it is a seriously solid indie pop outing with some real hit power. The album opens up with the a song that feels like exactly what it's about. a full anger simmering just under the surface. Camp is that fucking album. 13 tracks and no misses. cohesive as hell. seriously listen not only for musical themes that are carried through but also lyrical themes carried through all without the album ever feeling like it is just spinning it's tired. not to say there are no whack lines but they are all nestled between alot of slick shit. Bino can fucking rap.
Few emo albums are good at diving into a single topic. especially if that topic isn't being hopelessly obsessed over a girl. Armor For Sleep do just that impressively with What To Do When You Are Dead. A dive into grief and loss, the album tells the story of a man on the brink of death and his acceptance of losing everything. this is an album I'll probably never get around to reviewing but it's a fucking killer rock album. spunky, punky and angsty. it's a great and if you haven't listened to puns and needles, red flag or fallen leaves you are missing out on some solid punk rockage. https://open.spotify.com/album/0cTOvcvrbNiaiv4WXEUHzT
Kay blade reviews is coming back on a newer more sustainable way. no more grades. no more reviews of albums I don't want to finish. just me talking about shit I'm inspired to do.
trying something new. TUESDAY TUNES: LATE 2000'S TO EARLY 10'S CHILL ELECTRONICA AND HIP HOP. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4RUVUBO9k549weI3stOGcp... did I miss your favorite song? do you remember this ish? let me know what you think!
also I'm not reviewing boring albums anymore and will just be posting occasional retrospectives for that. that Sevendust Review and Tilian Pearson Review almost made me stop entirely. I will still Review bad albums but there is a difference between bad and boring. there is nothing to say about bland but capable music. you either like the music or don't but it's alot to try to say anything illuminating.
you may have noticed I've taken a break this week. it is because I am tweeking the process to both improve my Reviews and to give more space for the music. I'll be starting next week with three Reviews a week and listening to every album for at least a week before I even start writing a review for it. I will be using the extra time to both write my initial review and then be able to comment on how it grows after a fair amount of time and listens. the current schedule will be ...Monday - K-12 - Melanie Martinez Wednesday - Mutiny - Set Your Goals Friday - Metal Galaxy - Babymetal I will be doing something special for everyone tomorrow. a collection of mini reviews for songs I'm not going to do a full album Review for because they are albumless singles. as always feel free to send me any album Review requests. and if you want an extra Review or a more consistent non changing release schedule feel free to donate to me @kaythey on venmo.
Sometimes a solo album from a member of a band allows them to explore the possibilities whithin their craft that would stand out as weird amongst their home bands. Tilian Pearson's latest album The Skeptic is his newest outing without the rest of Dance Gavin Dance and it's an exploration of alt rock and electro pop. The album is a good display of Tilian's vocal chops sadly all he's given to sing too is some sleepy rock songs or similar low paced pop songs that have difficulty keeping up with the animated and energetic Pearson. If in all the current turmoil that has gone on between 2016's Revolution Radio and now has you primed for an American Idiot 3 from this Cali pop punk trio I'm sorry but you will be sorely disappointed. Green Day have decided instead to release the polar opposite a fun jaunty rocker that feels light and carefree. The album is just longer than Jesus of Suburbia is clocking in at just over 26 minutes it's briskness is welcome and there is no extra gunk to remove. Post hardcore mainstays Dance Gavin Dance have had numerous line up changes and close calls to ending but now on their 4th consecutive album with the current roster Artificial Selection they are starting to be able to experiment and build off the cohesion found on previous outing Mothership. Expertly weaving together their own brand of mathcore inspired post hardcore sound with pan flute solos and pop punk jammers into a grand album that feels bigger then any other Dance Gavin Dance album to this point. Veteran alt-metal, numetal and hard rock band Sevendust feel like they have gotten really comfortable. Honestly I have been sitting on writing this review for a few days by constantly listening to the album over and over again just hoping to find something specific to stick out to me. every guitar part, every drum hit and every bass line feels like it's in the right place.
