March is Women’s History Month. Peel back the layers and one aspect of women’s history lies at the foundation of most subsequent successes for womengaining the right to vote. The suffragist movement up to the ratification of the 19th Amendment has tended to focus on the efforts of white suffragists like Susan B. Anthony, Alice Paul, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Many chronically ignored Black suffragists worked alongside these women, including Nannie Helen Burroughs, Mary Ann ...Shadd Cary, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Mary Church Terrell, and Ida B. Wells. These five suffragists made crucial contributions to the causewhile also battling racism and discrimination. We are thrilled to welcome Angela Winfield as our chief diversity officer. Angela will join us this May and at a pivotal period for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the legal profession. She will help shape the future of LSAC, of law and education, and of access to justice. She will also lead DEI initiatives to help students from underrepresented groups find pathways into the legal profession. Angela is a lawyer, mentor, motivational speaker, writer, and advocate for... disability rights. She has devoted her life’s work to ensuring equal access and opportunity for all. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a lawyer. But I’d never seen anybody practicing law who looked like mea blind, Black woman. I didn’t know what someone who looked like me could do, but no one else knew either. To me, that was an opportunity to see what was and what is possible. I want to help them open their minds, open their eyes, and open doors to opportunities that they may have never imagined for themselves or for others. I’m excited to join LSAC and inspire people everywhere to pursue legal education. Rennard Strickland, a giant in law and legal education, passed away on January 5, 2021, at the age of 80. The loss to his decades of students, mentees, and admirers (if not devotees) is heartbreaking; the loss to legal education may never be recovered. Among Rennard’s many contributions as a professor and dean, he was a devoted mentor, a fierce advocate for equity, and an enthusiastic sharer of what sometimes seemed to be encyclopedic knowledge. Among Rennard’s countless car...eer achievements, he served as a professor and as the dean of four law schools the University of Tulsa, Southern Illinois University, Oklahoma City University, and the University of Oregon. Rennard was a visiting professor at Harvard, Florida, and Syracuse.
