As cooler temperatures arrive, it’s time to prepare for the dormant season the best time to enrich and protect our lawns and plants. Fertilizing now and in late fall helps lawns and plants store nutrients for the winter and get a head start next spring. Of course, unsightly weeds also store these nutrients, so fall is a great time to kill them.... At this time of year, herbicides move quickly through weeds, killing the roots. Also, help sensitive evergreens withstand winter’s cold, drying winds by using an antidesiccant. Start treating in November and continue until March. Broadleaf evergreens like hollies, rhododendrons and azaleas especially benefit from this protection. See more

Ways to deal with fall leaves. Get a big rake. Many home centers sell rakes up to 30 inches wide. Look for a no-clog rake with tines that don’t pierce the leaves, so you spend less time stopping and unclogging the rake. Many homeowners don’t realize that modern mulching mowers can be used with out a collection bag,. A mulching mower’s blades are designed to chop up leaves and grass clippings. You can let them sit on the grass to decompose and restore nutrients to your lawn.... It might be necessary to go over the leaves several times to get them chopped up into small pieces, but it’s still faster than raking and bagging! See more
