Dear Lindley Students; As educators, it is part of our jobs to keep politics and education separate. We respect and do not presume to know your families’ political leanings; however, we would be remiss as educators if we did not acknowledge this historic moment in American history. In 1920 the legal right for women to vote was established nationally. Today, 100 years later and 55 years after the Voting Rights Act, designed to protect voting rights for Black Americans was sig...ned, Kamala Harris was elected to the executive branch. She is the first woman vice president, the first Black vice president, the first South Asian American vice president. This is a day that future generations will write about, sing about, and make movies about, but for those of us who lived this day, it is a true honor and gift to witness this historic event. So, we as educators implore you to remember where you were, what you were doing, what you thought, and how you felt when you heard ‘the news.’ Remember that it was a sunny, warm, fall day, and that it was glorious. Free Literacy Program

Youth and Government The State YMCA of Pennsylvania runs the Pennsylvania Youth & Government Program for high school and middle school students from across the state. This year long program culminates in a three-day Model Government Conference at the State Capitol in Harrisburg where students participate in the only hands-on three-branch government experience of its kind. The Programs are led by students who are elected to leadership offices including Youth Governor, Lt. G...overnor, Speaker of the House, as well as other important positions. Students research and author legislation and lobby for its passage through committee, the House and Senate, and ultimately submit it for signature by the Youth Governor. Student Justices review student-researched and authored briefs, hold oral argument and issue opinions on current state legal issues. Gubernatorial hopefuls campaign for next year’s coveted Youth Governor-position. Meanwhile, the student-run Press Corps captures the Convention’s activities through its three publications throughout the weekend. There is something for everyone!
