Exciting things are happening at our Jane Addams Place shelter! Yesterday, we were thrilled to welcome People's Emergency Center (PEC), who stopped by to talk to our residents about the idea of Parents as Teachers. They brought lots of helpful info, as well as some fun goodies, and to top off a great afternoon, we had some tasty treats from Mr. Softee! Thanks so much for the People's Emergency Center, we are so grateful for everything you do.

Over the last year, LSH has been working with the Incarcerated Women's Working Group and other community partners to create this report, which looks at the main barriers for women entering and completing diversion programs. This report makes both visionary and concrete recommendations for eliminating those barriers and designing a system where we keep women free. Our subcommittee did in-depth interviews with women who experienced diversion programs, and incorporated their ideas, recommendations and testimonials into the report. The images in this report were captured by the incredible People's Paper Co-op Check it out! Great news for our caregivers! Unpaid caregivers in PA are now eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine! The definition of "health care professional" has been updated so that "individuals providing services for the elderly and persons with disabilities, including unpaid caregivers" now fall into the Phase 1A group designation. Here is how caregivers can get the vaccine:... Unpaid caregivers are ELIGIBLE to receive a COVID-19 vaccination under Phase 1A. However, you may be asked to provide documentation to verify your status as an unpaid caregiver by a vaccine provider. To verify your status and provide the needed documentation, follow the instructions below: 1. Go the Department of Human Services (DHS) Coronavirus-Related Provider Guidance and Resources Page: https://www.dhs.pa.gov//Pa/COVID19-PROVIDER-RESOURCES.aspx 2. Scroll to the bottom of the page. 3. Look for the checkbox that allows you to self-attest that you are an unpaid caregiver for an elderly individual or a person with a disability. 4. Clicking the check box opens a link entitled View Letter. This letter is from DHS Secretary Teresa Miller verifying the status as an unpaid family caregiver. 5. Please print this letter and take it to a vaccination site. This will allow you the proof you need to get a COVID vaccination in this phase. To find a vaccination site, go to this Department of Health (DOH) site: https://www.health.pa.gov//coro/Vaccine/Pages/Vaccine.aspx

Lutheran Settlement House is closed today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. His courageous leadership, activism, and perseverance in the face of persistent racism cannot be forgotten, and his core message of advancing justice and racial equality remains as relevant and urgent today as it was over 50 years ago. We at LSH believe unwaveringly that Black Lives Matter, and continue our own commitment to social justice, racial and economic equity, and opportunity for all. While MLK Day is usually one of nationwide volunteering, we know things look a bit different this year. It’s #MyStoryMonday and we’re honored to introduce you to Devon, a survivor who faced many legal obstacles when trying to rebuild her life. We don’t talk about it often, yet it’s very common for DV victims to get entangled in the court system after an abusive partner coerces them into illegal activities. We see survivors like Devon, who may lose their careers, homes, cars, confidence, self-worth, or even their lives, trying to stay safe. Devon faced many obstacles, including ...court and probation, and trying to find employment and housing with a criminal record. The impact of abuse can last for years. Devon has persevered, and after three years and many no’s, she recently heard a yes from a new landlord AND employer. Devon is committed to ensuring that all survivors know they deserve support, and that abuse is never their fault. Thank you for inspiring us Devon, and for never losing site of your dreams. Today, December 21 - the first day of winter - is Homeless Memorial Day. We remember all who have died due to homelessness, and are raising awareness of those who do not have a place to call home. As the weather gets colder, unhoused people are even more vulnerable to exposure. At our Jane Addams Place family shelter, we strive to provide each resident family with a warm bed, hot food, and programming including children's activities and trauma therapy. But we know there is a... long way to go, and many of Philadelphia's homeless residents still need support. To learn more about our Jane Addams Place shelter, get involved, or donate, visit our website: https://www.lutheransettlement.org/get-involved/ Everyone deserves a home to call their own.

Quality sleep is vital to our physical and emotional health, but achieving it can be challenging. This is especially true for caregivers, who stay up late at night to finish chores in peace, or to finally relish some time for themselves. When caregivers of older adults are sleep deprived, it affects the health and safety of themselves and the ones they care for. So, how does sleep work and how can caregivers get more of it? Please JOIN US on Wednesday, November 18, 12:30pm-2...pm to learn more about how caregivers can improve their sleep health.
