Three Lycoming College students have been accepted to present their work at the SUNY New Paltz Undergraduate Art History Symposium being held April 9-11! Esmeralda Luna ’21 (Spanish & political science double major) and Valeria Rivera ’22 (art: graphic design & business administration double major) are transforming their final papers on Mexican female artists from their Art & Politics in Latin America course this fall into their symposium talks. Kellie Mooney ’21 (art histo...ry & medieval studies double major) was also accepted into the symposium to present on medieval manuscripts! The three students demonstrate the true interdisciplinary nature of art history. You can tune in to watch them present alongside other talented student researchers from institutions including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Gettysburg, Brown, and more. Look up their presentation dates/times in sessions 2, 11, and 12 here: https://hawksites.newpaltz.edu/arthistorystudentsymposium//.

Attention local high school students! We invite you to participate in our inaugural Lycoming College Honor Choir! This day-long choral celebration on May 23, 2021 will feature intensive rehearsals and inspiring repertoire, culminating in an evening concert at the Williamsport Community Arts Center. All rehearsals and the performance will be socially-distanced and masked. We know the pandemic has caused many festivals and opportunities to be postponed, so we're excited to offer this option for young vocalists in the area! To learn more and sign up, go to: www.lycoming.edu/music/honor-choir.aspx.

At only 29 years old, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became one of the most prominent guests to address the Lycoming College community in Clarke Chapel. Sixty-two years after he delivered those remarks, our campus continues to value civil discourse and cultivate in our students the capacity to think freely. In the words of Dr. King, the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character that is the goal of true education. Last February, we dedicated this plaque to commemorate Dr. King’s visit and to inspire us to remain committed to the values of social justice and equality that informed his work. #MLKDay #LycomingCollege

New research from Lycoming College’s Mica Kurtz, Ph.D., associate professor of economics, provides strong evidence that weekend feeding programs produce increased reading and math scores in young students. An article on the topic, Weekend Feeding (BackPack) programs and student outcomes, written by Kurtz and co-authors Karen Smith Conway, Ph.D., and Robert D. Mohr, Ph.D., of the University of New Hampshire, was published in the December issue of Economics of Education Rev...iew. There is strong evidence to suggest that expansion of these programs could be a cost effective way to not only reduce childhood food insecurity but also improve scholastic outcomes for the most needy students, and this evidence is actionable. I would love to find out that reading our research led some localities to adopt a program or expand an existing program, Kurtz said. Congratulations to The Honorable P. Kevin Brobson '92, who was sworn in as the President Judge of the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court on Monday, January 11, 202...1, during a socially distanced ceremony at the capitol. Last year, Judge Brobson shared, "Lycoming College helped me to define the kind of person I wanted to be. I learned a lot about relationships, having the opportunity to interact with (and live with) folks from all types of backgrounds. The lessons I learned from those interactions have stayed with me over the years." To read more on this story, please visit https://tinyurl.com/yyqadj3s.

Rosa Ortega ’22, a political science (international law) major and French minor, has been volunteering with Williamsport’s Thrive International Programs since 2019, and now has the pleasure of serving as an intern in their immigration legal services department! She puts her skills to work to assist with a wide range of things such as translations, preparing paperwork, and communicating with clients to help explain their case and gather required documents. After college, Rosa would like to pursue work in an international setting, perhaps with the U.S. Department of State or the United Nations. Read more about her in Thrive International's post on their Facebook page!
