Hosting a 'Dumb Supper' on Samhain A Dumb Supper is an ancient tradition where the dead attend the living for a magical night of communion! This is a supper, ...that honours our loved ones who have passed on. Somewhat like a memorial. It can be most touching, invigorating, as well as relaxing. It is truly a beautiful way to remember and honour those we have lost, as well as inviting the 'Goddess' as your guest of honour. Children are not good at staying quiet so a dumb supper should be strictly for adults, however if you have teens that can maintain total silence during the supper, this is okay. Animals are free to roam in and out of the dumb supper room as pleased. Food has been offered to the dead throughout history, from prehistoric man through to the Celts, Egyptians, Romans, Japanese, Chinese, and even in the Catholic church. Dining with the dead is an ancient tradition that honors our divine ancestors regardless of culture or creed. Whether you're a Witch or simply wish to embrace your loved ones on the other side, we invite you to take part in this most sacred event. Spirits may manifest in many ways.... Guests may notice a ghostly touch, the scent of perfume, whispered messages or even physical manifestations. This is a solemn event where respect for the dead is crucial. By remaining slient, you open your heart and mind to those who have crossed over. Ask each adult guest to bring a note to the dinner. The note's contents will be kept private and should contain what they wish to say to their deceased friends or relatives, this will be burned in their candle at the end of the meal. The meal starts with with a blessing where each living guest is guided through the veil between the worlds to the realms of the dead where no one living may speak. There should be an altar in the room where they can place photos and mementos on during the blessings after which time guests are then seated and the meal is served. You can serve one course or several; traditionally the courses of The Dumb Supper are served backwards and the placement of everything down to the silverware is reversed as a means of weaving participants into the shadowy world of spirit. If you choose to have several courses below are course suggestions in order they should be served. Dessert Coffee Main course Soup Salad Appetizer Dinner Rolls You can of course change the courses yo suit your guests and timing however there are a few rules you simply must adhere to when hosting a dumb supper - Set a time for dinner to start and stick to it, make sure all guests arrive on time... This ritual is about honouring the dead and inviting them to visit us in spirit form. To arrive late once the ritual of blessing has already commenced is to disrespect both the dead and the living who have come to connect with them. No One May Speak During The Dinner This event is silent. This silence not only allows people to grieve their dead but creates a portal for the spirits to come through. How to hold your Dumb supper Start by making your dining area sacred, either by casting a circle, smudging, or some other method. Turn off phones and televisions, eliminating outside distractions. Set up an altar area. Have small candles on the altar to be lit by each guest, that they have come to honor. Ask each guest to bring a picture of their deceased loved one to be placed upon the altar. Set the table. One place for each guest, one place for each deceased and one place setting at the head of the table for the Goddess, and the other head setting for the host. Set up a separate table for your food, drinks, ice etc.... Just before your guests arrive turn off all electricity. The only lighting shall be candles. On arrival the host should say a blessing or prayer to honour your loved ones you will be inviting, you can use words that seem most fitting to you and your guests. Have the guests place their pictures on the altar, then step out of the room. Make clear what the guest must and must not do. Talking during supper is absolutely prohibited. The hostess will now enter the sacred room, bless it, sage it, and call upon the Goddess to join. Have each guest enter the quiet room. And as they pass the altar to light one candle in honor of their loved one, have them approach the Goddess seat and in silent mind, thank her for being with them. They may now take a seat. Serve the food to each person there, as well as for the Goddess and the loved ones being honored. Supper is eaten in total silence. Get up when everyone is done eating. Go to the Goddess chair and thank her once again, in silent mind for attending. Then the guests may leave the room fist stopping at the altar to burn their note to their loved one ( make sure youbhave a cauldron or similar on the altar to do this unless you have a fireplace in the room where the can be burned. As soon as guests leave the room they time may speak. As the hostess, you are the last one out after thanking the Goddess for being part in such a special ritual. Snuff out the candles, put up food, clear the table etc. Electricity may be turned back on as well. Everyone is then invited back into the room, where talking may continue. Share any experiences you may have felt or thought,or messages maybe given by deceased loved ones at this time. Enjoy the rest of your evening... Tarot readings, Ouija boards, Runes etc. Music can be played, chant, sing, dance... This is a time of celebration and memories. Have a blessed Samhain Moonflower )O(
