Today we’re making hung and dried peppers along with roasted peppers in olive oil just like Uncle Ernie used to do. Some of the peppers are placed in large crocks that we’ve had for decades. Do you remember seeing the peppers hang inside the bakery near the old ovens? What memories do you have of Ernie’s peppers, Malone Family feasts, or other culinary traditions associated with the bakery? Here’s to you Ernie! #malonesbakery100 #driedpeppers #roastedpeppers

Saluti! Addio! The End of an Era... It is with heavy hearts that the Malone Family announces the official closing of our beloved bakery after over 100 years in business. This was a difficult decision, but after the recent illness of our cousin Keith, who is doing much much better, and the death of the last brother Ernie in 2017, we found it impossible to stay open without the knowledge and expertise these two men possessed. Many members of our family have worked at the baker...y at one point during their lives, whether it was their first job, helping out during holidays or a way to get back up on their feet. They thanked their lucky stars that they always had a place to go, bread to eat, and pizza to devour! We, as many of you, included our family's pizza and bread at parties, baptisms, picnics, Fridays during Lent and virtually at any gathering we could think of where others needed food. This food was the lifeblood of many of our happiest moments, childhood memories and brought us so many wonderful friends and customers over the years. The Southside of Allentown has been our home since the beginning and we want to thank its residents for allowing us to touch your lives like you touched ours. From the earliest times in the 1920s when Phillip Malone traveled door-to-door selling bread to our neighbors (often giving away loaves of bread to those who couldn't afford it) to the many wonderful businesses like The Brass Rail and Zandys who proudly sold out product. The 40s, 50s 60s and 70s was a booming time for us when businesses relied on our Italian bread and pizza to feed their hungry customers. Over the years our children and grandchildren became know at their schools for bringing in bread and pizza, bonding over a single Sicilian-style slice with friends who never tried "the square kind" before, while making new memories with others who made our product a staple in their lives. We know how much the bakery meant to our community and we sincerely thank you for always thinking of us. We frequently had customers come in from out of town, from all over the country, just to stop in and order a pizza or eat a hot roll right from the oven (and of course pull out the middle)! We want everyone to know how grateful we are to have been open this long, to have seen so many things come and go and to have made such amazing friends over the years. The Southside of Allentown, the Lehigh Valley, won't be the same without Malone's Bakery... This page will remain up and updated with family and bakery memories from time to time and of course we ask that each and every one of you add to your "pinned memories post" or please feel free to share your memories on this post. We know this is sad, but we hope you can remember the good times.. and the best times.. that we had over these long, beautiful and of course delicious 100 years. ~The Malone Family~
