Daniel Hale Williams was born in 1856 in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Williams worked as a physician during a time when hospitals often did not accept African-American patients or staff. As a result, in 1891, Williams established Provident Hospital, the first interracial hospital on Chicago’s South Side. In 1893, he would go on to complete the first open-heart surgery without complications. Williams’ innovations in hospital policy and surgical procedures have revolutionized the medical field. #WeAre #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMatters #GreatInventors #GreatInnovators #BMOC

Patricia Bath, a Harlem native, has achieved tremendous success as a physician and inventor. She was the first African American ophthalmology resident at NYU, as well as the first African American female surgeon and the first to hold a patent for a medical device at UCLA. In 1988, Bath patented the Laserphaco Probe, an instrument that quickly removes cataracts, while reducing discomfort to the patient. The Probe is used to treat eye diseases all over the world, including restoring sight to patients with blindness. Bath is also the founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness and holds three other medical related patents. #WeAre #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMatters #GreatInventors #GreatInnovators #BlackWomen

"Philadelphia's high poverty rate didn't happen by chance; it is the logical outcome of policies that turbocharged suburbanization, underfunded the school district, and allowed racist structures to go unchecked." Great article about how Philly is America's poorest big city -- and what we can do about it. https://bit.ly/3m6EnwB

A new The Pew Charitable Trusts poll indicates that while the pandemic has profoundly affected everyone's mental, economic, and physical well-being, communities of color were among the hardest hit. With 49% reporting mental health effects for themselves or someone in their household, it's clear that residents of our most vulnerable communities need access to mental wellness services now more than ever! https://bit.ly/3lPGrca
