These church fans are tributes to some that are buried at the Bethel Burial Ground in South Philadelphia. This burial ground was once owned by Mother Bethel AME Church. For this exhibit I chose the names of babies who passed away from various causes and were buried in the "colored burial ground" that was sold and paved over for a playground. This ground, now deemed sacred will have a permanent tribute installed. The Photo fan is my uncle who died of pneumonia at a very young age. My maternal grandparents were denied care by a hospital close to where they lived and were told to take him to the "colored hospital". With no way to get there, because it was far, he died later that evening. We do not know where he is buried in Philadelphia.
A Child Shall Lead: Silent No More. Inspired by a video I watched of a little girl in a BLM protest march, and the Silent Parade of 1917 along 5th Ave. NYC.
