Still NO ONE has stepped up for Bear. At ANY time he can be euthanized! This is sickening. If doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that the behavior he is sh...owing in the shelter is simply due to KENNEL STRESS! He doesn't know why he is back at that hell hole. I will put up $150 for a rescue to save him. He also has go fund me money !!! We can't let him die. Just look at him. He just wants love. A rescue needs to step up real soon before it's too late and he becomes another victim, located at acct Philly See more

This is an amazing day for us here, and it’s all because of this photo. Taken by Steve Paige for American Wild Horse Campaign @freewildhorses 2 years ago duri...ng the Warm Springs roundup. I saw this photo of a horse jumping the panel to escape the trap, his desire and will to stay free so evident he would risk his life for it. It captured everything about why these wild horses need to stay free. I went to the BLM corrals to search for him to make sure he was OK. I heard he’d been recaptured, as he hadn’t wanted to leave his family. I found him, with his best friend, who had stayed in the trap that day. I searched and also found his lead mare and took photos of all of them. I asked to adopt the whole family, but was denied as the two stallions were to be returned to the wild, which I was so happy about. After that day I never saw his mare again. Over the next year I would go to the corrals and stop to visit, take photos and tell them that they’d be free soon. One day I saw Phoenix standing alone looking forlorn without his constant friend. I found out the Warm Springs release was cancelled and his friend had been adopted. So I asked if Phoenix was available for adoption and he was. The story will continue in the next post but in this one I wanted to give my heartfelt thanks to Steve Paige and all the photographers who document these roundups. They are out there now in wind and bitter freezing cold, desperately trying to take photos of the Wyoming roundup. Carol Walker @wild_hoofbeats is also out there and without these dedicated talented photographers, and many others, we would not be able to reunite families after they are captured. We have been helped by so many of them in finding families and these unsung heroes are such important advocates for our wild horses. As you know we were able to get Phoenix to Skydog where he has been for a year now. We gave him back the freedom he fought for so badly he made the jump seen around the world. But there was one thing more important to him - family - and today we get to give his lead mare back to him and reunite them after two years. More to come later today photo credit Steve Paige @freewildhorses American Wild Horse Campaign #skydogphoenix #mustangfamily #emptythepens #livewildstayfree #passthesafeact #mustangsmatter #stoptheroundups

I kept my horse We rode many miles, won many shows, and we spent hundreds of hours side by side. Now you’re old, you’re retired, and you’re my old man. ... I kept my horse when he went lame- every damn time. I kept my horse when I fell off - it wasn’t his fault anyways. I kept my horse when I thought it shouldn’t be this hard- I didn’t know that’s how I would learn. I kept my horse when he told me he couldn’t be ridden anymore - because I know compassion. I kept my horse when I moved away for college and struggled with time- because he’s family. I kept my horse when I was broke- because sometimes times are tough. I kept my horse when he couldn’t jump high and run fast because I could see that he still would try if If I asked but he shouldn’t. I kept my horse when I bought a new one- 3 actually, because he’s irreplaceable. I kept my horse when I wished I had room for one that was sound- because I owe it to him. I kept my horse when he was costing me more money to feed then any of my riding horses, because money isn’t everything. When his legs had enough- and all he could bare to carry was his own weight, I still kept my horse. When his career as a riding horse was over- I knew I had to keep my horse. No one owes this horse a retirement except for me, and shame on anyone who selfishly convinces themselves otherwise. I owe him so much more for what he has done for me, but I plan to try and make it up to him when he has nothing more to offer me. Because that’s how it should be be

Mares aren’t always well liked and for the same reasons strong women aren’t. Opinionated? Those opinions are not without good cause and maybe you can't figure ...them out or maybe you just don’t like her opinion of you. Change it and she will always be on your side. Stubborn? She just won’t let you bulldoze her. Treat her with respect and her resilience will be an asset to you. Difficult? You just can’t handle her. You don’t have what it takes. Stick with geldings then, and leave the mare for someone who understands her and appreciates the same qualities society has subtlety taught you not to like. Here’s to mares, to strong women, and to those who CAN and DO appreciate them! Abby and Rosie, mare face personified
