Message from President McKeegan: We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate. When he wrote these words, Martin Luther King, Jr. was an 18-year-old college student. The worthy objectives upon which the Rev. Dr. King concentrated the full measure of his brilliance civil rights for all throu...gh nonviolent transformation of society are rightly honored today. It is fitting and proper that each year, our nation celebrates MLK’s profound legacy. This day also allows us to do more than remember Dr. King. We should also take candid stock of how far we are from fully realizing his dream of genuine equality - not based upon group identity or perceived difference, but on the content of one’s character. Moreover, we should renew our commitment to act in tangible ways to promote peace and love of neighbor. Today, in our nation’s capital, thousands of our own troops (more than in Afghanistan!) are gathered to prevent violence and lawlessness by Americans against Americans. This is proof of the real fractures in our country and of the vital need for our own efforts at Mount Aloysius College. Here, we are engaged in the pursuit of true education, of transmitting intelligence plus character. Our graduates will lead the way to a brighter future. The Rev. Dr. King was a person of deep faith in God. That faith compelled action, despite bitter opposition and ugly bigotry, to lead efforts at building a more just society. Mount Aloysius was founded by women of deep faith, who were also compelled to act, providing education in responding to individual and community needs. These needs now include the critical concerns of the Religious Sisters of Mercy, and particularly today, anti-racism and nonviolence. On this national holiday, and every day, let us recall these words by Dr. King: Life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others? And let us provide a robust answer, with lives of intelligence, character, mercy, justice, hospitality, and service.

As a freelance interpreter, Cheyanne Marsh, ‘17, works with a variety of Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients. She is self-employed, which means she builds her own schedule and decides whom she wants to work withincluding political candidates and popular live performances. During her time at Mount Aloysius, Cheyanne double majored in American Sign Language/English Interpreting (ASL/EI) and English. As part of her studies, she took an internship with an interpreter referral agenc...y in Pittsburgh. Now, she contracts with that company a majority of the time. The best part of my job is that it is almost never the same, Cheyanne said. I get to work in so many different professions on a daily basis. #MountiePride to Devon Warner and Makayla Weyant, who served as leaders for their LIBA150 class’ service project. The class designed, created, and led the Christmas float for the Ebensburg Rotary dog park.
Today is #GivingTuesday. With the generous support of our alumni and friends, our goal is to raise $10,000 to endow a scholarship for our American Sign Language/English Interpreting students so they can help others. Visit https://www.mtaloy.edu/give/.
Our nursing department was recently contacted by a PA State Trooper who informed them that upon arrival at a crash scene on I-80 on Christmas Eve, they met Mountie nursing student Hunter Gathagan, who had noticed the accident and pulled over to check on the health of those involved and monitor them until additional help arrived. The officer remarked that Hunter demonstrated "genuine care" for the well-being of others. We are very proud of you, Hunter, and all of our Mounties who take the Mercy Values with them into the real world! Send Hunter some #MountiePride in the comments!
Our American Sign Language - English Interpreting students have the opportunity to learn ASL in a dedicated lab specific to their educational needs. They also get the chance to interact with the local Deaf community at events on- and off-campus. With the help of generous donors this #GivingTuesday, we want to create an endowed scholarship to help an ASL major achieve their dreams.
