Here's what you can expect at tomorrow's Nerd Nite! Dr. Danielle Sandsmark: "Towards Improving Outcomes After Traumatic Brain Injuries: The BOOST3 Study Description: This talk will focus on traumatic brain injuries (TBI), the leading cause of death and disability in children and adults ages 1-44, and the potential role of using brain oxygen-directed therapy to improve outcomes after these injuries. Dr Sandsmark will be describing a research study that will be taking place... at hospitals in the Philadelphia region, including Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania, to understand the role of treating brain oxygen to improve outcomes after severe TBI. The study will be performed under a special set of rules used by the US government for research studies in emergency situations, termed Exception from Informed Consent (EFIC). The presentation will be interactive, as the study team seeks your thoughts and opinions about the research study. Bio: Danielle Sandsmark, MD, PhD is a neurologist who specializes in the care of individuals with severe brain injuries in the neurological intensive care unit at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the development of clinical biomarkers that can be used to predict outcome and guide therapy after traumatic brain injuries. - Stefanie Kroll, "Amazingly Aquatic Insects" Aquatic insects are older than the dinosaurs and have evolved some amazing adaptations over the ages! This talk will wow you with information about aquatic insects' superpowers and send you away with facts you won’t believe about creatures you never think about. Bio: Stef Kroll is aquatic ecologist and researcher at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. This is her second Nerd Nite Philadelphia talk, and we are honored to have her back! - Jordan Miller, "Cybersecurity" This talk with focus on mobile security and explore steps that folks can take to secure their day-to-day data. Some talking points will be examples of cybersecurity incidents in the recent past, apps and other options for securing mobile data and protect from identity theft, and cyber foot print reduction as well as plans to recover from a hack Bio: Jordan Miller is a mobile Cybersecurity specialist for IBM. He works with large organizations to secure and encrypt their mobile devices and protect personal data in business fields ranging from pharmaceuticals to banking.
