Starting this upcoming weekend, as well as 11/14-15, and 11/21-22) Stations 11, 84 and 23 (City of Beaver Falls Fire Department, Rochester Fire Department and N...ew Brighton Volunteer Fire Dept.) will be teaming up again, for our annual food drive! Our members will be hanging out at the local grocery stores, collecting non-perishable foods, which will then be given to the Salvation Army, Beaver County Food Bank. The Third Annual Great Pumpkin Roll, the New Brighton Education Foundation’s annual fundraiser, will be held on Saturday, November 7 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Wooley Bullys, 1317 Allegheny Street. This years’ all-ages fun filled family event will also include a newly added Kids Pumpkin Roll. Participants are asked to observe all COVID-19 recommended precautions, including social distancing and wearing masks. Additional event details are available online on the Facebook event page.

Calling all New Brighton Lions fans to come to Oak Hill and send off the undefeated varsity football team this Friday, October 2 as they travel to Beaver Falls for the Battle of the Little Brown Jug. Lineup for fans will be on both sides of Mercer Avenue, on the sidewalks, starting at Oak Hill Field. Please be in place before the team departs at 5:15 PM. The lineup can extend down Fifth Street toward Fifth Avenue, as needed.

A household chemical collection is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 at the Brady’s Run Park Recycling Center from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Collection details can be found on the flyer or by visiting prc.org.

Residential Development Opportunity The Borough of New Brighton will accept sealed bids at the Municipal Building until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 for the sale of 615 Tenth Avenue. The lot is located on Tenth Avenue between the intersecting streets of Sixth Street and Seventh Street and is situated in the R-1 Residential zoning district. The 0.18 acre lot is vacant and was the former site of a municipal fire station. The fire station was demolished in 2015. The... lot has 49.5’ of frontage on both Tenth Avenue and Eleventh Avenue. The total tax assessment for the property is $8,700.00. Any future use of the property must be consistent with the uses permitted in the R-1 Residential zoning district, where the lot is located. Infrastructure for developing the parcel is currently in place, including public water, public sanitary sewer, natural gas, and electric all available at the public roadway. This year’s annual New Brighton Halloween Parade, originally scheduled for October 21, is cancelled. The New Brighton Recreation Commission’s 1-Mile Mad Dash, held immediately before the parade, is also cancelled. Trick-or-Treating in Daugherty Township, Fallston Borough, New Brighton Borough, and Pulaski Township is scheduled for Thursday, October 29 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, with the decision to participate being completely left up to parents and residents. Recognizing tha...t not all families may feel comfortable taking part in trick-or-treating this year, please turn on a porch lamp or outdoor light to show that your home is welcoming trick-or-treaters. All those participating in trick-or-treating are encouraged to remain current on Center for Disease Control guidelines and observe public health guidance and recommendations, including the practice of frequent hand sanitizing and social distancing. Please do not participate in trick-or-treating if you are feeling unwell, if someone in your house is unwell, if you are awaiting COVID-19 test results, or if you know that you have been exposed to COVID-19. Earlier in the month of October, the Recreation Commission will host their Annual Halloween 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, October 17 at 9:30 AM at Grove Cemetery. Additional information and online registration is available at www.nbarc.net. Also on October 17, New Brighton Borough Council’s Community Life Committee will be giving out individually bagged Halloween craft kits. The drive through distribution will be on Eleventh Street next to Professional Outfitters and Variety Shoppe at 1035 Third Avenue. The event will be from 12:00 Noon to 1:00 PM or until the kits are gone. The craft kits will only be given to attendees in a vehicle; no walk-up distribution will occur.

On this date 158 years ago, at around 2 pm, the Allegheny Arsenal in Lawrenceville (now a part of Pittsburgh) exploded. By the time the fire was put out, the bu...sy main lab had been reduced to a pile of smoldering rubble, and 78 workers, mostly young women, had been killed. This became the single largest civilian disaster during the Civil War. Of the dead, 54 bodies were unidentifiable, and were buried in a mass grave in the nearby Allegheny Cemetery. One of the identified bodies was that of Sarah Donnelly (also referred to as Sallie Donnell), who was born in Ireland before settling in New Brighton with her family. She was about 25 years old when she was killed in the arsenal explosion, and she was laid to rest in Grove Cemetery's Enlightenment section on September 20, 1862, with GAR marker #639. Today we remember Sarah and the dozens of others killed in the Allegheny Arsenal explosion.
