A friend of mine recently told me that the reason I’m struggling to learn how to speak Czech is that, in their language, any sentence combining a verb and a noun contains an incidental truth: the form of action actually alters the form of its subject. And this even includes names! So when you change the conjugation of the verb, you change the way the noun is spelled, pronounced, everything. Every year since I’ve joined Facebook, on this day, I have posted a comment of some sort, praising the soldiers who have fought for our country, and hoping for the leaders those soldiers deserve. It’s always felt a little bit hedgy perhaps because, while I am a patriot, and a believer in the true potential of the American Experiment, I’m not a huge believer in the use of military force in most situations. Here’s the reason reflexively, I just don’t trust the political and... appointed leaders. I know, I’m supposed to, but I don’t. And I know the job of a soldier is to follow orders. So, yesterday, while talking about Armistice and Veteran’s Day, when my wife mentioned that she’d heard the Armistice was actually arranged on November 7th, but they waiting until 11/11 at 11am to sign it for symbolic reasons, it set off some weird alarm bells. http://ninehostagearts.com/2018/11/12/armistice-day/ See more

Hey, friends. Two thoughts, on this day. One, far more succinct, comes from our 11-year-old. The other is from my messy brain. He and I were talking about the actual events of 9/11/01 over dinner, and I was trying to explain how, even though we were attacked by a former member of the Saudi royal family who was living in either Afghanistan or on the edge of Pakistan, we invaded Iraq. We just saw PAC’s Maria Marten, or Murder at the Red Barn (which rehearsed with us here at 9HA...) Be Warned! It is Dangerously Funny! You risk Loss of Bladder-Control Laughter if you attend. So much fun to boo and hiss at the villians and cheer for the heroes. (And its kid-friendly - even has a shtick written by a very clever 8-year old...) https://www.philartistscollective.org/maria-marten.html

I know, as a sound designer, that silence is relative. That a steady enough noisefloor is eventually interpretted as no sound at all. The fun thing about this, professionally, is that, in a controlled environment, we designers can create the impression of silence in a noisy world by making the world even busier, then dumping the added sounds. An impression of silence follows - one that often actually feels unnerving. [ 747 more words ] http://ninehostagearts.com//12/dont-believe-the-noisefloor/

Someone hung a home-made banner up over the edge of the Green Monster at Fenway Park. (Wait let me back up for those of you who don’t follow sports at all in any way Fenway is where the Red Socks play. The Green Monster is a giant wall in the outfield, over which it’s really hard to hit a ball. [ 1,079 more word ] http://ninehostagearts.com//sorry-not-sorry-lets-talk-rac/

This is not a cry for help. It is, hopefully, a tool for understanding. I am, despite all appearances, a fundamentally sad person. This does not mean that I don't have fun, enjoy my life, love my family and my work, or want to end my time on earth. It just means that, under everything, there is always an undercurrent of sorrow. When I was growing up, there were zero games ever played among my friends where the bad guys were Nazis. Because no one would be take the Nazi part. It was just unimaginable. We could play "USA vs USSR" and some of us would put on our best Russian accents because we could be fun and theatrical and lose. Rocky could fight Ivan Drago, because, as bad as he was, he wasn't a true monster. [ 1,044 more word ] http://ninehostagearts.com/2017/08/13/nazis/

Cooking time: 10 minutes, plus time to bake 7:40 Boys, you want waffles for breakfast? Ok, it’ll take about 15 minutes I need you to clean the guinea pig cage, and I’ll have these when you’re done. Here are all the things you need to clean out the cage. 7:43 Empty dishwasher to get mixing bowl. Halfway through, realize that the broken soap dispenser door was closed before the dishwasher ran, and since the spring is broken, no soap was used in cleaning the dishes.
