We at Nittany Energy have recently been made aware of a dramatic increase in scams targeting mostly the elderly in our region. In the interest of helping to raise awareness of this important issue we wanted to help educate people in our region by sharing some information. These scams have been around for many years; however, the frequency of attempts has increased dramatically in recent months. There are variations on the scam but they typically start with a threatening un...solicited call or email. The call may threaten the person or someone they care about physically or may claim to have embarrassing information which they will release if they are not paid. At this stressful time and with many in our area hurting financially we want to try to raise awareness of these scams. We encourage everyone to have a conversation with their family members and encourage them to reach out to someone they trust if they receive a call or email like this. If you or a loved one receives a call or email, we encourage our you to contact local authorities or the PA Attorney Generals Bureau of Consumer Protection at 717-787-9707. Most importantly have a conversation with those you care about before it happens to make sure they know what to do if they receive one of these calls or emails.
