This image from our Upper Black Eddy collection shows a woman in Victorian finery taking a stroll along the Delaware Canal during its heyday, when flat cargo barges would pass live-in houseboats going in the other direction. The canal was built in 1831-32 and was officially closed a century later, its utility overtaken by the railroads.

In another image from our Bridgeton collection, a 1999 newspaper clipping shows the class of 1935 at the Upper Black Eddy School that used to sit near the bridge. The building was ruined in the flood of 1955 and had to be razed.
The Nelson Sigafoos house next to the Bridgeton Schoolhouse during the 1936 Delaware River flood. The schoolhouse came through just fine, but would not survive the battering it would take nearly 20 years later in the 1955 flood.
Though Bridgeton Township isn't in our purview, many folks aren't aware that Nockamixon was originally part of Bridgeton until they split apart. So we do have some interesting photos and other historical artifacts we can share from that area. Here's a view from the High Rocks on the Nockamixon Palisades (after which our school district is named), showing the UBE-Milford bridge when it was still a covered wooden structure.
We're so happy to celebrate reaching the milestone of 400 likes for this page. Thanks to all who have liked and followed us, as we continue to bring you tidbits about our area's wonderful history!

This photo, though undated, is likely from the Delaware River flood of March, 1936. Heavy rains and snowmelt from March 17-20 that year caused flooding on most waterways throughout not just PA and NJ, but many northeastern locations, as well. This shot shows a rowboat in front of the Upper Black Eddy School, which would be destroyed by another flood not quite 20 years later.
Looking across the Delaware River to the Milford, NJ, mill during the Pumpkin Freshet of October, 1903. Up until the devastating flood of 1955, the Pumpkin Flood had been known as the Big One on the river. Note that the bridge is still a covered wooden structure at that time.
