Please join us tomorrow worship beginning at 10:30 am via zoom. Two things to know about tomorrow's service: 1. We welcome Matt Gaventa as guest preacher tomorrow during worship Matt is senior pastor at University Presbyterian Church in Austin, Texas, and previously served as pastor to Amherst Presbyterian Church in Amherst, Virginia, and as chaplain to Sweet Briar College. Matt is an acclaimed writer and preacher whose work has been featured in Working Preacher, on the Day...1 Sermon Broadcast, and in The Christian Century, for whom he co-hosts the podcast Sunday Morning Matinee with Adam Hearlson. Matt holds degrees from Georgetown University, the University of Iowa, and Princeton Theological Seminary, and was the 2012 recipient of the David H.C. Read Preacher/Scholar Award from Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. He currently lives in Austin with his wife Sarah and their son Charlie. 2. Virtual Coffee Hour this week! In an attempt to continue to build community and serve our congregation, we will be holding a virtual coffee hour after worship. At the conclusion of the service, people who remain will be invited to join a breakout room where they will have five minutes to catch up and say hello to their church friends. After five minutes, you can join another room and then another for a total of about 15-20 minutes of conversation and fellowship with other members of the congregation. So, bring your coffee, your snacks, and your finger foods and gather again for a good OPC coffee hour.

A Message from Pastor Adam: The apostle Paul says, "Do not deceive yourselves. If you think you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For wisdom of this world is foolishness with God." The early church took this commandment very seriously. The week following Easter was known as Bright Week and culminated with Bright Sunday. Early theologians encouraged play and merriment on this Sunday by appealing to the Risus Paschalis, the Easter Laugh..., where God pulled a practical joke on the devil by raising Jesus from the dead. Even in a time of trouble, the liturgical suggestion on Bright Sunday is to laugh, play, and join in celebration that God has overturned the world. This Sunday we will celebrate Bright Sunday with laughter, joy, and celebration. First, since Jesus has inverted the power structures of the world, we will invert the worship service starting with the benediction and ending with the Call to Worship. Bonus points, if you wear your clothes backward to church on Sunday. Additionally, we will find ways to joyfully celebrate the resurrection with jokes, merriment and laughter. I encourage you to find the spirit of joy and play at this time. Wear a silly hat. Dress like a chicken. Dance with your partner during a hymn. The message of Easter is one of liberation and freedom. Even in the midst of trouble, death, and uncertainty, the church is called to celebrate the resurrection with abandon. The chains of death have been broken, the gates have been opened. This is our Easter faith. May we have the courage to celebrate this good news with the celebration it deserves. So join me at 10:30am on Sunday. Invite anyone who needs to smile. Invite anyone who needs a reminder of the good news of the gospel. Please join us tonight at 7:00 pm. for Maundy Thursday Service online. https://zoom.us/s/269097088 or Call in +1 312 626 6799 Meeting ID: 269 097 088. We will be celebrating communion during worship. In preparation, I encourage you to gather a beverage and something to eat. Bread and juice (or wine) work well. The amazing thing about communion is that the elements are not required to be bread and juice, only that which is common (hence communion). The power of the element is in its ubiquity. Whatever is at hand will do. In Mexico, where wheat was scarce, they used tortillas. In places where wine wasn't available, they used water. The early church would sometime use milk and honey. Bring whatever is at hand.
