The Pearlstein Gallery is conducting a survey and would like your input about what is art and what is not art. It’s our hope to show the range of ideas and learned opinions representative of our community. We expect wit, intelligence, academic brilliance, staid formalism, and radical diversity. Please take this opportunity to have your say. We’d like you to provide two images and a short statement. First, an image of something that you believe represents an unquestionable exa...mple of Art? And second, something that is clearly Not Art? (Actually, we’re thinking of something you think is close to, or mistaken for ‘art’ but falls short. Something that is art for others but not for you. So, please, no pictures of your refrigerator unless absolutely essential.) Finally, a statement that explains your reasoning. Limit of 150 words. A cross section of entries will be curated and posted to our website: Art-NotArt.com with your name. We realize there’s a lot to say so there will be a comments section for each entry where we hope greater discussion between participants will take place. Commentary will be reviewed for decorum and posted by Pearlstein Staff. Please submit your statement with images attached to [email protected] (Subject: Pearlstein Art/Not Art) by Thursday, May 27. Be sure that images (jpeg) attached are 500kb or less. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email us.

Ángela Chiguasuque Neuta is the governor of the Muisca Council of Bosa. After meeting with Enrique Peñaliso, the Mayor of Bogotá, Columbia, she was able to negotiate the modification of the partial plan El Edén-El Descanso and recover Indigenous territories that were at risk of urbanization. Busta, originally from Chía, Columbia, was inspired by the goddess Chía (from the Chibcha language the one who is like the moon) and Ángela Chiguasuque, a character of power who Busta... believes is a hero for fighting for Indigenous land. Busta hoped this mural would transmit the peace and beauty of life as we lose sense of the beauty of being when we are caught up in the fast pace of life. He bid viewers slow down, reflect, and raise queries when viewing his (S)Heroes Among Us mural. Busta’s mural is currently on display at 3401 Filbert Street : @_dannymurray #IndigenousPeoples #pearlsteingallery #philadelphiaart #phillyart #graffiti #murals

In sharing his inspiration for his (S)Heroes Among Us mural, Leon Rainbow said, I have always felt fire is one of the most destructive forces and feathers, in Native American culture, represent power, honor, and strength. He aimed to exemplify LaDonna Brave Bull Allard’s quote, The abuse of women is well known in American history, world historyand tells you a lot about what is happening to our Earth by showing something powerful being destroyed, just as women are powerful.

In 2012, Lorelei Williams founded Butterflies in Spirit, a Vancouver dance group raising awareness of violence against Indigenous Women and Girls and the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls across Canada. Williams’ passion for dance activism began with her desire to bring attention to her missing Aunt Belinda and to honor her beloved cousin, Tanya Holyk. She attended numerous rallies and marches to honor these two influential women in her life. However, she felt ...the banners and posters displaying the pictures of missing and murdered Indigenous women did not capture the attention she wanted. Her solution? Dance. (StarQuest Dance) (S)Heroes Among Us is on display at 3401 Filbert Street. The three new murals, painted by Priscilla Bell, Busta, and Leon Rainbow, celebrate a female leader in an Indigenous community. #MMIWG #ButterfliesinSpirit #pearlsteingallery #philadelphiaart #IndigenousLeaders

Leon Rainbow is an artist in Trenton, NJ who creatively combines graffiti, street art, and other artistic forms into innovative projects and events. He reaches out to a wide audience, from galleries to the walls of inner cities. As Debra Miller points out, Despite his tribal descent, he embraces the city and its cosmopolitan population in a contemporary style. Leon learned how to do simple block letters from an early age and has been drawing and creating art ever since. Leo...n built on his foundation and exaggerated the letters into elaborate forms and styles and drafted a strong connection to hip-hop culture. Maturing spiritually and artistically, Leon realizes that his art is a channel for deeper expression. He applies fine arts composition and principles to his work which allows him to reach and visually educate on social issues and current events. He uses styles that his young audience can relate to and designs his visual media with a powerful spiritual message. Leon believes that his approach allows him to reach a wide variety of people: Anyone who looks at my art sees something beautiful it might just be color, shape, or form or they can tune into the narrative. My goal is to make art that resonates on several levels. Annually, Leon curates two art festivals in New Jersey for area painters and the community as well as dedicating his civic duty to teaching several workshops for the Trenton After-School Program. Leon continues to evolve his art by taking lettering into dimensional media, as well as fashion. His knowledge of Graffiti Art History remixed with new material and styles alter the perception of his art form to present a positive message. Leon Rainbow is one of the three artists joining us for (S)Heroes Among Us THIS Sunday, October 18, 2020! (S)Heroes will be live streamed on the Gallery’s Twitch channel at 1PM.
