Marian Anderson is famously known for breaking barriers as the first Black woman to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Less known is the 70-year courtship with her husband, noted African-American architect Orpheus King Fisher. Centered in the Valley of Oaxaca and the major city of Monte Alban, at one point Zapotec rulers formed a powerful civilization in southern Mexico. Effigy urns like this one were placed in tombs and may represent rulers, priests, or gods. On Tuesday, we watched democracy in action as Philadelphia turned out a record number of votes and bore witness to a transparent live-streaming of the ballot counting process. In the next few hours, we await the outcome of a volatile election year, acknowledging the service of tireless volunteers and front liners sustaining our city amid a pandemic. But yesterday, following the video release documenting Walter Wallace Jr.’s death right in our own neighborhood, we continue to... grieve with his family and neighbors in West Philadelphia, and all fellow Philadelphians. We restate that #BlackLivesMatter and reject systemic racism that continues to plague our communities. Beyond words of support, we commit to action. As part of a long-term accountability plan, we work on embracing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility as well as anti-racism in everything we do-from amplifying diverse voices in exhibitions and programs to strengthening inclusivity in our hiring and communications practices. We recognize that this is only a place to start, and the work is ongoing. With a mission of transforming the understanding of our shared humanity, we resolve to break down barriers to equity as we work on being a Museum our community needs.

The six musical tones played on (slit drums) mimic the sound of Tetela speech. Tetela men in Central Africa learn to combine these tones to communicate messages about warfare and ceremonies, and to make music for dancing. In the evening, the sound of this drum carries for 10 miles. A Tetela craftsman created this by hollowing out part of a tree trunk through a slit in the top of the drum.
