#WomenInMedicine #WomenInMedicineMonth #WIMMonth Featuring Dr. Jasmine Zheng, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Penn: "As a third year medical student first discovering the field of PM&R, I was immediately drawn to it because it encompasses so many disciplines. Now, as a physiatrist who practices both general rehabilitation and cancer rehabilitation, I have the privilege to work with providers from across Penn and other health systems to collaborat...e and design care plans for patients trying to regain quality and joy in their lives. Regaining function can often be difficult work for patients, and requires grit and determination, and an advocate (sometimes in the form of me, their provider!) to help them succeed. Patients’ frustrations and pain through that journey can be daunting and humbling for me, while their successes and relief are always a source of energy and happiness for me. I’ve found PM&R to be the place where the humanities and science intersect where through each clinic door I open there is a chance for me and another individual to establish a relationship with the shared goal of improving quality of life in more ways than just improved functionality. As conversations continue around us about racial injustice, I have looked carefully at my own practice, community, and specialty to ensure rehab medicine strives to overcome biases including those towards race, sex, gender, and class. I’m hopeful for the good we can all do by keeping our doors and ears open to promote safe and equitable spaces for our patients as they strive towards recovery."
