From Monty Ferguson USA Hockey local Supervisor of Officials..... A local official, who got his start officiating at Hatfield Ice and Bucks County Ice Sports Center, worked his first USHL game in Youngstown, Ohio November 19th as a linesman. The game, between the Youngstown Phantoms and the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders (from Iowa) was won in overtime by Youngstown 3-2 so in essence, Sam Sufler (18) has more than one USHL game under his belt. His post game evaluation (all games a...re supervised) has resulted in Sufler receiving his second assignment, December 10th. Sufler began officiating hockey at the age of 15 when he was a player for the Ice Dogs. Two years ago, his outstanding skating and convincing signaling was notice by a number of scouts at the Philadelphia Officiating Camp run annually by Mike McDevitt. That experience led to an invitation to the Junior Development Program. Sufler now attends the University of Pittsburgh as a freshman, studying business administration. When he is not studying, Sufler is officiating Junior and College hockey in the Pittsburgh area. The USHL is the elite Junior A league in the USA, rivaling the Canadian Hockey League as the premier junior development league for future NHL stars. One other local official, Brett Sheva, is a full-time USHL Referee.
