The Soapbox: Community Print Shop & Zine Library 14.07.2021

The Soapbox is saddened by the recent passing of Philadelphia printmaker and educator, Alexander (Sasha) Kirillov, on May 26. Alex's support, enthusiasm, and skill played a critical role over the last few years as we built out our space at 4700 Kingsessing Ave. As owner of Stonefox Editions, he moved presses for us before our studio had walls, and enthusiastically returned to move them again as our church basement developed into a community printshop. He was an invaluable re...source for care of and acquiring equipment, including an AB Dick 360 Offset Press he generously donated from his own studio. Alex taught in the MFA Book Arts and Printmaking program at the University of the Arts, serving most recently as Interim Director. We had the privilege of working with him to navigate the challenges of this past year, and he collaborated with us to create opportunities for his students. Alex modeled the very best traits of an active and engaged community member. We will remember him for his generosity, his depth of knowledge, and his infectious enthusiasm for all things print. (The photos we have from Soapbox press moves reflect Alex always on the move.) A memorial will be held Thursday evening, June 3, at the Icebox Gallery at Crane Arts. Further information can be found on Stonefox Editions Instagram page: @stonefoxeditions

Join 100,000 Folds in honoring and mourning COVID-19 victims through origami. This community sculpture project is folding 100,000 pieces of paper - one for each of the first 100,000 deaths in the United States from the pandemic. During this event, gather virtually with artist Joanna Hutchinson to learn to make the folded pieces, and build community while folding with others. The folded paper units will be assembled into larger sculptures to be displayed in Philadelphia upon c...ompletion, when it is safe to do so. Participants in this online folding session will get a sneak preview of some of the plculpture. Participants will receive a package of 45 custom cut sheets of paper to fold during this event, sent to the mailing address provided through the USPS. After the event, participants are asked to send their folded work to the artist by USPS. This online event requires students to have a device to join the class with reliable internet access. If you are interested in participating in the project, but not the online event, you can sign up to work independently at 100thousandfolds.com. Co-hosted with The Rotunda. See more
