The School District of Philadelphia today broke ground on a new, $1 million state-of-the-art Livestock Center at W. B. Saul High School, the only school in the state dedicated to agriculture and food science, horticulture, animal science and natural resource management. The construction of the 3,900 square foot facility is expected to be complete in February 2019. It will provide an exciting learning environment with amenities that replicate industry standards, replacing an outdated barn that served the school for at least 40 years.

A ceremonial ribbon-cutting officially opened the new schoolyard at Alexander Adaire School. The Adaire schoolyard is the latest in a citywide partnership among the School District of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Water Department, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation, and national non-profit The Trust for Public Land, as well as four years of organizing by the Friends of Adaire, and key initial support from Council President Darrell Clarke. The work advances several citywide p...riorities, including the School District’s Green Futures plan. The new Adaire schoolyard was designed to provide improved opportunities for recreation and learning and will also capture stormwater on rainy days with new green infrastructure features. Formerly a bare asphalt yard, the new schoolyard now features a large rain garden with a nature trail for exploration and learning, sitting benches and a long seating wall providing ample seating for gathering and relaxing, a fenced-off teacher parking lot. In addition, it includes two distinct play areas: a playground structure with obstacle course and colorful tumbling hills to promote creative play. The intersection of rain garden, sitting wall, and mounds area is also already proving an attractive outdoor classroom space.
