#Concussion research in the last few years has shown that initiating aerobic exercise in a controlled manner is effective... for managing concussed patients. #Exercise within 2 days of a concussion has been shown to be safe and improves outcomes in concussion compared to telling a patient to rest. The days of cocooning a patient after a head injury is going the way of the dinosaurs: it is time to retire that thought process. But this doesn’t mean that you should jump out and return to your full levels of performance right away. Current evidence recommends a graded program of exercising at a heart rate that doesn’t exacerbate your symptoms. Researchers have called this subsymptom threshold exercise. You had a brain injury and the brain does need to heal, but gently engaging in some aerobic exercise appears to help rehabilitate the function of your autonomic nervous system. In a way, the immediate aftermath of a concussion is like a form of #dysautonomia where your brain’s metabolic capacity is compromised. This form of exercise puts a gentle stress against your autonomic nervous system to manage your heart rate and arterial blood flow to meet the energy demands of the brain. Exercise is literal medicine for the injured brain and it’s a strong supplement for a healthy brain. #concussionrecovery #neuroscience #neuroplasticity #wellington #jupiter #functionalneurology See more

To reduce the risk of infection, it is recommended that people at risk of influenza and/or COVID-19 consider taking 10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. Based on the available data, the supplementation of EPA and DHA in COVID-19 patients appears to have potential beneficial effect in managing the cytokine storm. Therefore, the use of EPA and DHA supplementation should be considered as both a supportive therapy and a prevention strategy in SARS-Cov-2 infection. Source: Szabo, Z et al. e The frontal lobe of the brain is one of the key areas that give us our very distinctively human qualities. We tend to t...hink of the frontal lobe as the big boss in the brain. It’s associated our ability to produce conscious movement of our limbs and eyes, and the prefrontal cortex is associated with high levels of cognition, planning, behavior, and working memory. A big part of how the frontal lobe works is by inhibiting a lot of the reflexive or reactive pathways in the brain. An in tact frontal lobe is necessary for inhibiting our primitive reflexes, preventing our amygdala from making us cry over spilled milk, and preventing our attention from going to random stimuli when we want to focus on one thing. We often think of the brain as responsible for exciting neurons to do things, but performing movements and thoughts successfully actually requires the brain to inhibit tasks they may interfere with the end goal. In basic anatomy we think think of the frontal lobe as one big blob, but we have several areas of the pre frontal cortex with unique connections to limbic, autonomic, and association areas of the brain. #neuroscience #neuroplasticity #functionalneurology See more
