From our friend Ashley. Read both her description as a farrier, and my description below from PR perspective-- both are accurate and the photo is boss. I will add another photo of a similar foot grown out. Hopefully, you will have an "Aha!!" moment about hoof asymmetry and so-called "low heels". (****Note, as well, that both forwardly migrated hoof capsule on fore feet and standing camped in on hind feet will result in compression and damage to the digital cushion, leadi...ng to reduced palmar/plantar angles. Different etiology, same problem.****) This is such a critical point to understand this typically named low heel is actually super long, but it length runs forward, not down it is extremely distorted. It is VERY common for some (less savvy) farriers to place a shoe right on top of those bent tubules. Another way of visualizing this is seeing that the capsule surrounding the coffin bone has grown so long that it’s weight-bearing surface has been displaced forward there is now a mismatch between the center of the foot and the center of the hoof capsule. You can make a model" with your hands make a tight beak coffin bone with one, and use your fingers and thumb to simulate the hoof capsule surrounding it. Now move that capsule away from the toe. Voilá! Long toe with under run heel. Now imagine the heel of the actual P3 bone sinking and laying those tubules on their side. That is how we misdiagnose these as a low heel, and mistakenly think it must be preserved at all costs. The up foot and the down foot are BOTH long, just in different planes.

Norway PR starts in three days!! Not the greatest to have it happen in the midst of a pandemic, but I’m sure we will be inspired by fear!
