What is an OMS? An OMS also known as oral and maxillofacial surgeon is the surgical expert of the dental profession. OMSs’ extensive education and training, surgical expertise and understanding of esthetics and function qualify them to treat diseases, defects, injuries and esthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. The first time many people interact with an OMS is to develop a plan for wisdom teeth management, but this is just one aspect of the broad scope of an OMS practice. What is Edentulism? Edentulism is the condition defined by the loss of at least one functional tooth. It can be classified as partial edentulism (one or more lost teeth) to complete edentulism (when a patient has lost all teeth). Whether due to decay, periodontal disease or trauma, edentulism has a significant effect on a patient’s oral health. While there are many solutions to replace a patient’s missing teeth, dental implants are the only potentially long-term solution to this lifelong problem. Pottstown Oral Surgery COVID-19 Update: With the outbreak of the COVID virus and the stay at home order from Governor Wolf in Pennsylvania patients have concerns regarding what they should do about their dental needs. The Department of Health has essentially shut down dental procedures that are elective in nature such as cleanings, dental implants, crowns and teeth whitening procedures. Urgent and emergent procedures where patients have pain, swelling, infection or bleeding... are allowed. It has been recommended but not required that procedures that generate aerosolized particles such as drilling or tooth extractions be performed in a negative pressure room and with enhanced Personal Protective Equipment like N95 or higher masks, to minimize contamination risks. Our office in Pottstown is open for these urgent and emergent procedures and is equipped with a negative pressure room, N95 masks, and protective equipment and measures to protect our patients and staff. We have always prided ourselves with our ability to care for our community and in this time of need we will be happy to handle your dental emergencies. If you have any of these concerns please contact our office to schedule an appointment and we will be able to see you within 24-48 hours.

What To Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal? It can take several weeks to fully heal after a tooth extraction. To support healing, it is important to follow an OMS-approved plan of what to eat after wisdom tooth surgery. The mouth and gums will be very sensitive post-procedure, and while patients can build up a tolerance to more solid foods as time progresses, sticking to very soft or liquid options throughout will give the best results. What Are Impacted Wisdom Teeth? Impacted wisdom teeth are those that do not have room to develop normally or fully erupt through the gums. Nine out of 10 people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth, and if left untreated, impacted teeth can damage neighboring teeth, become infected and even transfer bacteria into the bloodstream. Tooth Extraction: Simple Vs. Surgical Tooth Removal: Even with proper dental care, teeth age and can decay or break. Many damaged teeth can be repaired with fillings or crowns, but when the damage or decay is excessive, the tooth should be removed. A tooth extraction may not seem complicated, but tooth removal should only be performed by a professional and in most cases, during a visit to an oral surgeon. Is Removal Of All 4 Wisdom Teeth Necessary? Patients often ask their oral and maxillofacial surgeon (OMS) if it’s necessary to have all four wisdom teeth extracted even though the teeth might not yet be visible inside the mouth or they have erupted without any known problems. The decision can be difficult. Even if all four wisdom teeth are free of infection and not causing pain or if only one tooth is problematic an OMS may still recommend they all be removed.
