In 1804, Emma Hale was born in the log home that previously stood at this location. When she was about five, her family pulled the log home off the foundation a...nd built a home similar to this current replica. To us, the Hale home may seem modest, but those who recorded visits during the early 1800’s described it as a mansion. Compared to others, Emma grew up in a financially stable home, allowing her to receive formal education and even to have her own career as a school teacher. When she was 21, she met Joseph Smith Jr. and, a year later, decided to set aside the comforts of wealth for a life of service. Perhaps the thing about Emma that inspires me the most was her ability and her desire to care for others. As an adult, it would have been easy for her to be selfish with her belongings she would have had much more had she decided to stay in Harmony but she was constantly sacrificing the little she had to make sure that others had places to stay and food to eat. Emma and Joseph had nine children of their own, though many of them did not live past early childhood. On top of that, Emma adopted the infant twins of a neighbor when their mother died in childbirth. Years later, after Joseph’s death, Emma remarried and took in the two children from her new husband’s previous marriage. I have no doubt that there are many, even outside of her immediate family, who owed their lives to service provided by Emma. As I read about Emma this week, I couldn’t help but think about how each of us depend upon another who sacrificed all that He had so that we could live. The Savior, Jesus Christ, also stepped away from his comfortable home to live a life of service. He chose to give His life so that each of us could find shelter and nourishment. I believe that it is His goal to help us find our way back to our home in heaven. It is there that we may live with Him and our Father in Heaven in perfect peace and joy, and it is only through Him that we are able to overcome the trials of this world and to achieve our full potential. We just arrived in Palmyra NY five days ago to begin our service as the site leaders for the Church Historic Sites in New York and Pennsylvania. We will be here... for two years. We visited with missionaries at the Hill Cumorah Visitors’ Center, the Smith Farm and Sacred Grove, the Peter Whitmer Farm and Visitors’ Center, the Book of Mormon Publication Site, and also the Priesthood Restoration Site on the Susquehanna River in Northern Pennsylvania. We are excited to be here during this bicentennial year commemorating the First Vision. Please come and visit! See more
