African Americans experience mental health issues in a number of ways yet only 1 in 3 Black adults who need mental-healthcare receive it. In this edition of V...OICES, we talk to Black Pittsburghers who share their lived stories of being Black, overcoming the stigma of mental health treatment, and breaking barriers. To learn more about African Americans & mental health, visit NAMI: https://www.nami.org//Identity-and-/Black-African-American For more VOICES episodes, visit: https://www.wqed.org/voices

Hello, Please assist the Information Sharing and Advisory committee (ISAC) in disseminating the ‘’We are listening and learning’’ Survey. This survey is aimed at identifying and understanding any racial inequity within the Office of Developmental Programs’ (ODP) service system. Survey takers are anonymous. I strongly encourage minority providers to complete the survey and be candid about their experience on race and racism within the ODP/provider system. This is a time to re...ally be heard and to voice your concerns. We cannot change the system if we as monitories are not represented at these meetings, forums, and committees. I know that some, if not many, have experienced racism within the system whether you are a provider, family member, advocate and/or professional. What I have heard over the years is that the system has not always been fair with minority providers and the sentiment is that it has to do with race and/or racism. With everything that is going on in our society, in our communities and in our nation, now is the time to participate, so that we can be part of the change and the movement towards a better system that embraces minorities within the ODP service system. Just remember we can learn from each other and we are not each other’s competition in this industry. Let’s be better and stronger together and we can continue to support one another while serving the individuals within our organizations. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. For the minority providers that are providing Residential Habilitation that is regulated under 6400: 1. Stop asking people to run your business when you do not have a clue how to do it yourself. No one is going to love your buisness like you do and if you don’t want to run it neither does the person you hired. You need too really vet the people you hire. 2. Stop throwing big salaries at people to do jobs that they have no expertise in. Money does not fix the problem and you... need to understand your business structure and what you need. Hiring according to skill-sets. Example: If I am Quality Manager, do not ask me to do Human Resources... Hire for that role or position. 3. You may think this is a lucrative business because of what you think you see. The reality is this industry is hard and always changing as far as policy, regulations, legislation, etc... 4. If you never worked in social service or the industry itself, ask yourself why do you want to do it. If it is to make a bunch a money, then shame on you when the lives of the individuals matter more. 5. Stop hiring your friends and family who do not have the right skill-set; it is not good business practice. Nepotism makes me cringe and it is a disaster waiting to happen. 6. It is modern day slavery to work your own people like they have no life. Work-life balance is actually important. No one wants to work like a dog with no incentive.(insurance package, time-off, bonuses, etc.) 7. Get a business mentor and really look at your budget and business structure and stop living off the individuals you place in your group homes, apartments, etc... Yes, we know that those budgets are big but there is more to it than that. This industry was never intended for people to get rich... 8. If you think after a few years in buisness you can walk away and travel the world and sit on your bum, you are sadly mistaken. You need to always have your hands on the pulse of your agency (always, always, always)... 9. Use people for their expertise not for what you want. Start contracting and/or outsourcing your work if you can not afford to have it in-house. 10. It’s pretty easy to get started, however, hard to maintain with the DSP crisis, you have to consider another strategy on how to maintain good talent because all providers including the minority providers are competing for the same people. The DSPs are jumping from one agency to the other. What makes you as a minority provider stand out? I say all this say, I know and want minority providers to be better and to do better. We are making it hard for those who really have the right intentions and heart to care for individuals that have a disability, mental health and/or autism. Signed, Juane L. Tyler

Does anyone know a clinician and/ or therapist that is a Trauma Informed Care specialist? My company, Tyler Consulting and Associates has been invited to bid (R...FP) to provide Trauma Informed Care for DHS. This would include providing the service, training, possibly writing a program and teaching. I have been a professional leadership coach and trainer for three years on a contractual basis, however, Trauma Informed Care is not my area of expertise; this would be a great opportunity to partner with TCA and for us to grow as a small black owned business. Serious inquires please email at: [email protected]
