Rebalance Physical Therapy 01.12.2020

Last week we covered Upper Cross Syndrome and this week, we're covering Lower Cross Syndrome on the blog and YouTube channel! So What is Lower Cross Syndrome? Similar to Upper Cross Syndrome, Lower Cross Syndrome (LCS) is an umbrella term for a pattern of muscular imbalances in the front and back of the lower body. Due to factors such as trauma, injuries, habits, and poor posture, some muscles in the lower body region can become tight and others can become weak creating a cro...ssed pattern in relation to each other. Lower Cross Syndrome can cause symptoms such as: low back pain, leg and hip tightness and/or pain, tingling and numbness throughout the legs and feet due to nerve compression, labral tears, herniated discs, and arthritic changes to the spine. To alleviate the symptoms of Lower Cross Syndrome, balance needs to be restored by stretching tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles. While you could begin to address your LCS through DIY stretches and exercises, the body is a complex structure with 360 musclesmaking it difficult to pinpoint what your "problem" muscles are and how to effectively stretch and strengthen the right muscles. A skilled physical therapist, like those atRebalance Physical Therapy, can look at individual muscles and your body as a whole system to evaluate your imbalances and how best to address them. If you live in the Greater Philadelphia area and are suffering from Lower Cross Syndrome, please visit Rebalance Physical Therapy in person! If you are unable to travel, we are also doing phone consults and Telehealth visits. We will work with your past and current medical history to figure out how to help you recover. We currently have online programming for Male and Female Pelvic Pain and C-Section Solutions to help our patients take their recovery and healing at their own pace. If you would be interested in a similar online program for muscular imbalances, please let us know! With our online programs, Rebalance PT aims to empower you through accessible, evidence-based information, to help you restore and rebalance your body.

Full blog link in the bio! Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS) is an umbrella turn for a particular pattern of muscular imbalances in the upper body. It gets its name from the "X" pattern created from a combination of tight and weak muscles. We are especially vulnerable to poor posture and Upper Cross Syndrome during the COVID-19 pandemic because we're at home more often and tend to look at screens more frequently throughout the day. Symptoms of Upper Cross Syndrome include head an...d neck pain, headaches, anatomical changes in the elbows, forearms, and hands, and even tingling sensations throughout the arm. If you are experiencing any of these above symptoms, you could be suffering from the muscle imbalances of UCS. You can begin to address the symptoms of UCS with stretches to target the chest muscles, the muscles at the side of the neck, and the muscles at the back of the head. You can also make postural corrections and build a more ergonomic workspace at home. However, oftentimes dealing with UCS is not as simple as adding a few stretches into your daily routine. To be fully recovered and free from the symptoms of Upper Cross Syndrome, there aremany muscles that need to be addressed. For you, there may be a very small, specific muscle that is your "problem" muscle that can't be stretch with a simple YouTube tutorial. This is where treatment from a skilled physical therapistcomes inthey can help you pinpoint your issues and improve muscular imbalances with a targeted treatment plan. If you live in the Greater Philadelphia area and are suffering from Upper Cross Syndrome, please visit Rebalance Physical Therapy in person! We can treat your muscle imbalances to improve your symptoms and improve your quality of life. If you are unable to travel, we are also doing phone consults and Telehealth visits. We currently have online programming for Male and Female Pelvic Pain and C-Section Solutions to help our patients take their recovery and healing at their own pace. Have you ever experienced genital pain, perineal pain, or pain in the rectal area? Initially, you may have thought the pain was due to an infection or a sexually transmitted disease. Howeverafter being testedyour results came back negative and you're still experiencing the pain. So What's the Problem? Here at Rebalance Physical Therapy, our clinicians have over 20 years of experience specializing in pelvic floor physical therapy and treating pelvic floor dysfunction. If you...'re still suffering from genital, perineal, or rectal pain, and you have tested negative for STDs and infections, your pain is probably due to dysfunction with your pelvic floor muscles. The pelvic floor muscles are a group of muscles that sit within the pelvis and surround the structures within the pelvis. They even line the underside of the pelvisalso known as the perineal area. Because of the unique placement and distribution of the pelvic floor, well-functioning muscles are vital for daily activities and pain-free living. Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for many health care providers to disregard the pelvic floor or not fully understand how they affect bodily function. The reality is that tight or dysfunctioning pelvic floor muscles can cause a multitude of problems. Perineal pain, genital pain, bladder symptoms, gastrointestinal issues, and colorectal issues can all be related to dysfunctioning pelvic floor muscles. When pelvic floor muscles become tight, they may create referred pain in the structures of the perineum. Tight pelvic floor muscles can also affect bowel movements and bladder symptoms, trigger irritable bowel syndrome, cause hip and back pain, and even impair sexual function. With colder weather and COVID-restrictions, we're all sitting and staring at screens more. Increased inactivity makes having correct posture, both when sitting and standing, important now more than ever. Do you find yourself suffering from more back, shoulder, or neck pain? Maybe you're experiencing feelings of overall "tightness"? Your posture may be the culprit. Incorrect posture can be harmful to the structure of the body as a whole, reducing muscle functionality, tighteni...ng ligaments, and causing joint pain. A slouched, forward-head position can cause ligaments and muscles along the back of the body to strain from tension and become tight. Meanwhile, the ligaments and muscles along the front of the body can become slack, compressed, and weakened. Consistently poor posture can even causebones to change shape and accelerate degenerative changes in the spine. Want to learn more? Can physical therapy help you perfect your posture again?
