This was an article that was written highlighting one of our amazing CareGivers, Chase Mazalusky! The article was published in the Republican Herald. I work a...s a caregiver for the elderly every day, Mazalusky said. Outside of that, I still run, I do calisthenics at home just to stay in shape. His work takes him to elderly high-rise housing, as well as to the homes of individuals. Some of the people I work with have disabilities and, at the end of the day, I’m still healthy, Mazalusky said. I’m still here. Below is the full text from the article. __________ MAHANOY CITY It was a tough way for Chase Mazalusky’s junior track and field season at Mahanoy Area to come to an end. It was unknown at the time, but it was an even tougher way for his high school track and field career to close out. Ultimately, he says now, it turned into the best memory he’ll take away from his time on the track with the Golden Bears. With the finish in sight, Mazalusky had a healthy lead in the 300-meter hurdles at the 2019 District 11 Class AA Track and Field Championships. Finish first and it was on to the PIAA Championships at Shippensburg University. Then it happened. A stumble. Mazalusky clipped the final hurdle and fell to the track. Pen Argyl’s Eric Lobb was able to get by him for the win, the gold medal and, ultimately, the berth in the state meet. Mazalusky managed to finish second, but his time wasn’t good enough to qualify for states. Instead, his season was over. And, as it came to be with the coronavirus pandemic eliminating spring sports during his senior campaign, so was his track career. I was in first by a good bit and the last hurdle got me, said Mazalusky, thinking back to that day at districts. I barely got second because I kind of crawled over the finish line. I never got to states. Mazalusky’s junior season was a good one by any measure. He captured Schuylkill League championships in the 110 and 300 hurdles and joined teammates Marcus Crespo, Ben Terry and M.J. Terry on the 400-meter relay unit that earned a fourth-place finish at leagues. At the District 11 meet, that unit earned a sixth-place finish, while Mazalusky earned a third-place finish in the 110 hurdles in addition to his disappointing second in the 300 hurdles. Chase is very personable, very responsible, hard working, said Bears track and field coach Tim Tobin. He’s one of those quiet leaders. He leads by example. You know, you tell him to go out and get it next year, and, unfortunately, next year never came. So how did Mazalusky respond immediately after the district disappointment? He went to work. Right after districts, the people going to states had practice and everybody else didn’t, Mazalusky said. I would still show up at track practice and work on my hurdles for next year. I was devastated. It really hurt. Helping to take just a bit of that sting away and at the same time cementing the hurdles finish as a positive memory for his lifetime was the reaction of Lobb, the Pen Argyl athlete who finished first in the 300. He gave me his first-place medal, Mazalusky said. I gave him my second. I have a video of it (the race) and you can hear everybody gasp when I hit the last hurdle. I was a second-place finisher, with a first-place medal. I got a picture with him and I met his mom and dad. And when his senior season and that last chance to reach Shippensburg was taken away? I was initially very upset, Mazalusky said. But then I realized at the end of the day, me being sad or complaining wasn’t going to change anything and I had to focus on what’s next in life. The Mahanoy Area graduating senior is taking direct aim with the same can-do attitude he displayed in athletics at a career in health care. His future includes one year at Penn State Schuylkill, then enrollment in the Joseph McCloskey School of Nursing. Toward that end, he has spent his time since the closing of all Pennsylvania schools working for Caregivers of America, a Pottsville business that provides home health care and other services for those in need. I work as a caregiver for the elderly every day, Mazalusky said. A lot of what I do is not major things. I do their dishes, get their groceries. Sometimes, they just need someone to talk to. It’s why I’m not complaining when it could be so much worse.
