The month of November is Black Catholic History Month. This is Sister Antona Ebo! She lived in St. Louis and was one of the first three African-American women t...o enter the Sisters of St. Mary, joining the order in 1946. Sister Antona earned a bachelor's degree in medical records (1962) and a master's in hospital executive development (1970), both through St. Louis University (tag). A passionate defender of civil rights, Sister Antona flew from St. Louis to Selma, Alabama on March 10, 1965 and participated in the March on Selma demonstration in protest of the events of Bloody Sunday. The only African-American nun to participate, Sister Antona stated her reasons for participating were, "I'm here because I'm a Negro, a nun, a Catholic, and because I want to bear witness." Sister Antona was a founding member of the National Black Sisters Conference and served as its president. She continued to testify against racism and injustice into her 90’s, offering prayers at services in the wake of the Ferguson, Missouri demonstrations in 2014-2015. She passed away on November 11, 2017 and is interred at Resurrection Cemetery. See more
