New 2020 NEC requirement in Article 230.85 requiring an exterior emergency disconnect for all one and two family residential dwellings. Certain utility companies allow combination devices with meter socket and disconnect in the same enclosure. New Jersey will be adopting the 2020 NEC later this year; Pennsylvania will most likely be a couple years behind as usual. This new requirement will make it much safer for first responders to de-energize power without having to enter the building or wait for POCO crews to arrive.
