HEALTH MYTH DAY 12 THE FINAL MYTH The only way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more. This is a MYTH! While exercise is great and important for optimal health, it is not the only way to lose weight. Cardiovascular exercise helps decrease the risk of heart disease and stroke, help control blood pressure, and improve energy and mood. Strength training increases bone mass, maintains and supports the musculoskeletal system, and can improve body composition. Exercise... can also decrease cognitive decline (risk of dementia) and improve sleep! The most important consideration for weight loss, however, is diet. Evidence-based research proves that eating a whole food diet high in fiber (from food versus supplements), good protein sources and healthy fats is key to managing the hormones that dictate whether your body will use the fuel for energy or store it as fat. Additionally, the proper combination of nutrients and appropriate meal timing determines if your body will store fat or naturally burn its fat stores for energy. So while we encourage you to get moving, if you have an injury or other issue preventing you from intense or regular exercise, know that your weight loss efforts are not lost. Your Simplex Health Dietitian can help get your diet on the right track for weight loss.

HEALTH MYTH DAY 11 Meditation - takes too long to fit into my schedule, is a religious practice, is too hard because you have to clear your mind, sit still, be physically flexible, etc. These are ALL MYTHS! While meditation practices have roots dating back thousands of years used by various religions, today's meditation practices are not associated with any religion. It is merely a pause in thought which, over time, can help to create inner peace - a worthwhile effort in t...he year of a pandemic or even during everyday holiday stress! Meditation is easy to do, but if you need some help getting started, there are plenty of (free!) apps that you can download for guidance, inspiration, and motivation. You don't have to do yoga poses to meditate (however, that's a healthy habit, too!). All you need to do is pause and focus. The basis of mindfulness meditation is paying attention to purpose, which includes paying attention to your thoughts. Additional benefits include a more relaxed state of mind, blood pressure management, and may even improve blood sugar. How's that for a healthy New Year's resolution? How to Meditate: Simple Meditation for Beginners. Sit or lie comfortably. Close your eyes. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage, and belly. Simply focus your attention on your breath without controlling its pace or intensity. If your mind wanders, return your focus back to your breath. Maintain this meditation practice for two to three minutes to start, and then try it for longer periods.

HEALTH MYTH DAY 10 Fiber supplements are a good substitute for high fiber foods. THIS IS A MYTH. Dietary fiber is a critical component of health. It helps to normalize bowel movements, lower cholesterol, control blood sugar levels, aid in achieving a healthy weight, and in short, can help you live longer. However, these benefits come from eating whole foods high in fiber (think: vegetables, fruit, beans/legumes) due to the nutrients and plant compounds found in these foods... that work synergistically to promote health and can't be replaced by over-the-counter fiber supplements. So when trying to increase your fiber, think whole foods first! Fruits Pears Strawberries Avocado Apples Raspberries Oranges Cherries Blackberries Blueberries Vegetables Carrots Beets Broccoli Artichoke Brussel Sprouts Sweet Potato Leafy Greens (spinach & kale) Legumes Lentils Kidney Beans Split Peas Chick Peas Nuts & Seeds Quinoa Almonds Chia Seeds

HEALTH MYTH DAY 9 All plant-based foods are healthy. This is a MYTH! Many individuals tend to associate specific phrases or buzzwords like plant-based on food products as automatically being better for us. However, just because a food is labeled as plant-based does not necessarily give it the free pass to be deemed healthy. With the growing selection of plant-based meat alternatives and vegan/vegetarian versions of just about every type of food, it is most important t...o read the ingredient lists on any packaged item carefully. While there are healthy options of these varieties out there, many are highly processed and tend to have overwhelmingly long ingredient lists. Some of these food products may contain artificial additives, preservatives, chemicals, refined sugars, flours, etc., and unfortunately can be equally or even more processed than the regular products. When it comes to plant-based foods, it is best to choose minimally processed whole food options such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, beans/legumes, and healthy oils/fats as much as possible. PRACTICE SAYING NO Rehearse responses to friends and family members who continue offering you food to eat when you’re full. You can say, This is delicious, but I’m full. I’d love to take some leftovers, or simply, No thank you, even if you have to repeat yourself.
