ITS COLD OUT....IS YOUR HOME PREPARED? If you don't let your faucets run slightly in extreme cold weather, you might have an ice blockage that may cause a large amount of pressure inside of the pipes, making them burst and leak uncontrollably. To keep your house safe during the winter months, when you don't necessarily use the plumbing a lot --such as when you go out on vacation -- you must let the faucets drip slightly. This prevents any kind of burst or freezing that blocks... the water supply to the house. Bursting Pipes Pipes almost never burst at the point ice builds up at. They can handle the freezing expansion. The problem occurs when ice builds up to a point that it begins to expand, increasing the water pressure against the pipe leading into the faucet. When the water pressure builds up enough, the pipe gives way and lets all the water out of it. You should take precautions against a burst when the temperature outside reaches about 20 degrees Fahrenheit, according to The Weather Channel. What Does Dripping a Faucet Do? When you leave the faucet running slowly, any ice that collects around the pipes has little chance of building up properly. Be aware that letting the faucet drip water doesn't totally prevent ice buildups, but it does prevent pipes from bursting by relieving some of the pressure that builds up when a pipe freezes. Don't worry about the water pressure upstream where the pipe picks up water from the source. The pipe's pressure gets automatically relieved since water comes back to the source. What to Do About Frozen Pipes If your pipes freeze anyway, even with your best efforts to continue the flow of water, stop the main water supply to avoid a pressure buildup. Do not try heating the pipe with an open flame. Infrared heating devices or electrical heaters might help you sort out the problem. If that fails, get a plumber to look at the pipe. Do not use anything but an infrared or similar heater to melt the ice inside, for safety reasons.
