Stewartstown Historical Society to Host Open House at the Old Hyson School The Stewartstown Historical Society invites the public to join us for an Open House on October 6, 2019, from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the restored Old Hyson School. The Stewartstown Historical Society has been assisting Hyson School owner Myrna Hyson Ross and her contractor on the restoration of the 1857 stone, one-room Hyson School. The initial work included clearing of the area around the school, tempor...arily stabilizing the collapsing north wall, cleaning of the exterior mortar joints, removal of the interior floor and joints, and disassembling the north wall. Subsequent work has included stabilizing the shallow foundation, the rebuilding of the north wall, reinstalling the north wall windows frames, pouring a concrete floor, reinstallation of the original floor joists and flooring, installation of a new summer beam and king post truss, reroofing, and finish carpentry on the windows and trim. The exterior was repointed with a lime-based mortar. The renovation is now almost complete. The one-room, stone building, built in 1857 based on dendrochronology, was used as a school until the construction of the frame Hyson School in the early 1890s. After the new school was constructed, the stone structure was repurposed as a dwelling and occupied into the early 20th century. The school is located on Round Hill Church Rd near its intersection with Hyson School Rd, Stewartstown, PA 17363.
