Happy New Year, River Hawks! The earliest recorded New Year's celebration is believed to date back around 4,000 years when the Babylonians celebrated the new year at the first new moon after the vernal equinox, which was usually around late March. Throughout time, the new year continued to be welcomed during a significant astronomical event, until 46 B.C., when Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar. The month of January would then honor the namesake Janus the Roman... god of beginnings whose two faces allowed him to look simultaneously into the past and the future. Caesar then instituted January 1 as the first day of the year. Today, New Year's is celebrated in many different ways all around the world, but most traditions include toasting to champagne and eating foods thought to bring good luck for the coming year. We wish you all the joy this new year can bring to you and your family!

The Susquehanna River Hawks transformed from champions on their fields of play to champions of service in response to the global pandemic of 2020. The coronavirus could not and did not dampen the student-athletes’ competitive and resilient spirit. Around the world, people have been celebrating Christmas with various traditions and that are both religious and secular in nature. Christians celebrate Christmas day as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ the Son of God whose teachings form the basis of their religion. The name 'Christmas' comes from the mass on Christ's day that was later shortened to the name Christmas. Not all Christians celebrate Christmas on December 25. Roman Catholics and Protestants cel...ebrate Christmas on December 25, while Eastern Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7. The tradition of celebrating Christmas as a secular holiday can be illustrated with singing carols, sending holiday cards, exchanging of gifts to loved ones, a delicious feast, and of course with Santa Claus as the source of providing presents for the family. Merry Christmas to all!
