2 Saturdays ago, Jake had the opportunity to join in the local "love your park" work day at Mifflin Square. Philadelphia is home to the oldest and one of the largest urban park systems in the United States. Neighbors and local leaders from an organization called SEAMAAC are dreaming together and developing plans to revitalize and transform Mifflin Square to better serve the community. Check out seamaac.org to get a more in-depth look at the great work they are doing here in South Philadelphia! #kivugapyear #taprootgapyear #gapadelphia
Every October we set aside time to intentionally reflect on our stories personally and communally. It requires vulnerability, trust, and courage, three things that don't come easily. This past weekend, the Philly cohort chose to dig in deep and embrace the challenge. We couldn't be more proud of them! #kivugapyear #taprootgapyear #gapadelphia #midsemesterretreat #7stories
Last week, our students met with Hani, a local leader in the Indonesian community. Hani and her husband spend most of their time gardening and sharing the fruits of their hard labor with their neighbors and those in need. Hani is also involved in an initiative that recycles used cooking oil and turns it into compost for the garden, bio-fuel, and soap! #feedthebarrel #kivugapyear #taprootgapyear #gapadelphia
Yesterday we headed to Kensington, a neighborhood in Northeast Philadelphia, to hear from our friends, Shane and Miguel. Through their stories we gained some insight into the brokenness they have encountered and the creative and redemptive work that they have engaged in. #kivugapyear #taprootgapyear #gapadelphia #urbanfarming #chickens! #thesimpleway
