Be sure to join us next week for our final market of the season - the Harvest Festival! Wear your Halloween costumes!

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the construction related to the Bigelow Project, we have decided to suspend the Pitt Farmers Market for the fall 2020 semester. We spent the spring and summer exploring how to hold a safe and successful market for vendors and customers, but the reality of the pandemic and the resources we'd need to host a market were too much for the Pitt Farmers Market team. Your safety is our priority. Although we developed plans following Allegh...eny County Health Department farmer's market guidance, we don't have the space, people, or equipment to hold a market that would be enjoyable for students or profitable for our beloved vendors. We hope that by April 2021 we'll be able to return to campus with a new market in the renovated William Pitt Union grounds. Until then, we encourage you to find other ways to support small, locally-owned food businesses. The situation is dire - restaurants have started closing, and farmers and producers who depend on wholesale and large restaurant purchases are struggling to find markets for their products. If you have a @pitt.eats meal plan, look into how you can use 25% of your dining dollars at off-campus restaurants. Visit farmer's markets nearby like the Saturday Bloomfield market (@bloomfieldpgh) or Sunday Squirell Hill market. These markets have been able to adjust to the pandemic and have measures to keep you safe. Buy local in grocery stores whenever you can. And remember the power you have not just to buy local, but also to advocate. Get involved with on-campus food justice organizations like @pitt_plant2plate @pittrealfoodchallenge @pittpantry and Pittsburgh organizations like @justharvestpa @pittsburghfoodpolicy @412foodrescue @pghfoodbank @growpittsburgh @pasafarming. Let's be real - your favorite restaurant, farmer, or producer may not survive the pandemic. It's up to us to make sure they have the support from customers, institutions, and government agencies to make it through the pandemic. Thank you all for your ongoing love and support. We’ll be spending the next few weeks reviewing the last season including the feedback we received on social media and from our survey and planning for an exciting fifth season in a new space! We’re excited to see what Bigelow and the William Pitt Union Driveway will look like after the construction. See yinz next year!

Just two more days until the Harvest Festival! Join us for the last farmers market of the season and the last market in the WPU Driveway as you know it now before it undergoes a lil facelift.

Last week’s Farmers Market spotlight goes out to Bri and Sophie from the Pie Place! Bri started working for the Pie Place in 2016 and just returned to working for them after doing two, year-long terms with Americorps Vista. Sophie just started working for the Pie Place a few weeks ago. They are at the farmers market every week selling pies, rolls, cinnamon rolls, pepperoni rolls, cookies, granola, brownies, and a different kind of crisp every week! Bri’s favorite thing they a...re selling is either the granola or the blackberry pie and Sophie’s favorite is the crisp. The current owners of the Pie Place bought the bakery ten years ago and it is owned by two women, Jess and Julie, who are both mothers along with being shop owners. The storefront is located across from the South Hills Village Mall. They are our longest standing vendor; they have been with us for 4-5 years!
