As York County expects to enter the "Yellow Phase" this coming Friday there is understandably a lot of questions as to what this means for the York Ice Arena. In conversation with City of York officials I have been told that we will not be re-opening under the yellow restrictions. We understand that this is a frustrating time for all of us as we are all anxious to return to "normal". Unfortunately that time is not here...yet. Please remain patient and hopeful that we can open again before to much longer. We, the staff of the York Ice Arena, are looking forward to seeing you again when we can all do so safely! Go green!

The York Ice Arena this weekend will showcase hockey at its very best, with hundreds of Mite players lacing up for the purest love of the game. On Friday, the Y...ork Devils will welcome about 650 players from 59 teams during our Mite Madness tournament. They will compete in nine divisions, ranging from U6 to Mite AA. It’s our fourth season hosting this tournament in its current format, and it has grown by about 10 teams each year. Tournament Director Mike Conte, who is also a coach in our club, started Mite Madness when his son was a U6 player. Conte was underwhelmed by previous tournaments that seemed to have an it’s just Mites mentality and placed rec teams in the same division with high A teams. It was a recipe for disaster with teams constantly playing noncompetitive games. Players were crying, coaches were yelling at each other, parents were coming down yelling at the refs. Everyone got a trophy, but no one really felt like they won anything, Conte said. The following year, Conte took over the tournament and spent more time recruiting teams, talking to coaches and managers, and created divisions with more parity. In its first year, the York Devils Mite Madness tournament had 30 teams competing in six divisions. The games were tighter and the whole atmosphere was more exciting, he said. It’s cliché, but the smiles and the laughter are truly the best. I have never heard so much laughter coming from the players’ benches as I do over the course of this weekend. Our club is proud of Conte for taking an event that seemed like an afterthought to one of our most successful events that showcases the best of hockey. It celebrates the youngest members of our hockey community and the future of our game by providing balanced competition in a positive environment, Conte said. That positive environment, and weekend full of fun and hockey, wouldn’t be possible without the help of numerous volunteers. Thank you to everyone who will be helping us this weekend. We really couldn’t do it without you. This event is especially dear to club President Wendy Schanberger, who knows the importance of focusing on the future of the club just as much as the outgoing players. Mite Madness is a great way to show our support for all levels of the game, she said. Many times organizations highlight their AA teams, or older Bantam and Midget teams. This tournament helps to highlight our energetic Mite teams. It’s also proof the game is growing, she said. This tournament helps foster the love for hockey, Schanberger said. The fact that there are so many teams in Mite Madness shows how hockey is a growing sport. To see all of those little guys and girls falling in love with the sport it’s amazing!
