What Do All Those Letters and Numbers Mean? All fertilizers are labeled with three numbers. These numbers represent the ratio of nitrogen (N), phosphate (P) and potassium (K). In basic terms, nitrogen promotes foliage growth, phosphate encourages healthy root growth and flower production and potassium promotes the overall health of the plant by building disease resistance. Which Fertilizer Do I Need? For general needs, we recommend a fertilizer that has high amounts of nitrogen and low amounts of phosphate. While selling, I was asked the question of why is it important to buy from a nursery or grower that possesses what is posted in photo. It is a license that allows me to have piece of mind, when I sell plants to my customers. It also gives my customers piece of mind when they purchase from me. We are inspected by the bureau of plant, Pa dept of Ag. Some may of heard of the plum-pox virus. Although... we know it originated in Bulgaria in early 20th century, we also know that in 1999 it made its way to the US, and right in our backyard, Adams county. So what does that have to do with this piece of paper? Plum-pox spread rapidly into not only Adams county but also Franklin and Cumberland counties, all the way to Camp Hill. A lot of precautions were taken to isolate the virus and keep it in Adams county. However, homeowners, unknowingly spread the virus, by sharing or yard-selling plants that were infected. Millions of dollars in lost fruit production was lost by many growers. The impact was devastating for our agriculture industry. So next time, you ask, why buy from a licensed grower, you have the answer. A lesson right from our own backyard . See more
