Hello farm friends! We have some new followers so I thought I would reintroduce our farm and tell you a little bit about our cows and cream-top milk. I'm (Randi) the third generation on our family dairy farm located in Bentelyville, PA. My pap started the farm in 1952 and we've been caring for our special, heritage breed cows ever since. In April 2020 (hello pandemic!) we started bottling our amazingly delicious, cream-top milk to sell directly to the community. Our milk is... unique because we don't homogenize (less processing and manipulation - better for you) and we vat pasteurize (the milk is heated to the lowest temperature legally allowed - more flavor, enzymes, good bacteria, nutrients are kept intact). The goal is to keep the milk as natural as possible. This also makes it an awesome option for the cook who loves to make cheeses (ricotta, paneer, mozzarella). You can find our cream-top milk at all 5 Market District locations, East End Food Co-op, Harvie (https://www.harvie.farm/farm/harvie-farms-pittsburgh/signup), The Marketplace at Emerald Valley, and Bloomfield Saturday Market. Our rare and special Guernsey cows are raised on pasture (with access to indoor space if they choose) and fed the highest quality hay and feed that we grow ourselves. We never use growth hormones and the milk never has antibiotics. It's true that comfortable, happy cows make the most delicious milk and that's certainly reflected in the flavor of our milk. Raising beautiful cows is our passion and labor of love. I'm thrilled we're able to share with our community.
There is a LOT of winter happening at @bloomfieldpgh. We’re here with the best milk.
Are you sitting down? There’s a sliver of blue sky at the Bloomfield Saturday Market! You can ALMOST see the sun too. A rare treat for Pittsburgh in the winter.
Hello hello! The Bloomfield Saturday Market winter season kicks off tomorrow (December 5) and we’re pumped to see all of the cold weather market warriors. The hours are slightly different for the winter - 11am-2pm. Another small change is that we’ll be INSIDE the market in spot 14 as opposed to the parking lane.
Thanksgiving is certainly a time to pause, gather and reflect on all that we’re thankful. When we began this journey to bring our milk directly to our community, we could not have imagined that our first day in operation (bottling milk - not milking cows) would be in the middle of a SHUTDOWN due to a global PANDEMIC. Quite an entry for the ole diary. We are incredibly grateful for the support from our community and customers to be given the opportunity to save this small, f...amily farm. THANK YOU to every person who chooses our milk. It truly makes a difference and an impact. This scene has taken place twice a day, every day, for the last 68 years (in the same barn). While the future is uncertain, we are truly grateful that we get to continue to do what we love to do - raise our beloved bovines who in return give us the world’s finest milk. Wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving (no matter how weird and zoomy)!
