We are always watching, wide eyed, at the world around us, and trying every day to be a little bit better in sustainable ways. Not only in how we source ingredients and packaging for our products, but where we sell them (we dropped a large nationwide retailer a few years ago after they were bought by the largest online retailer out there, with whos way of ...business we don’t quite agree), where we buy our food (small farms, and those who source from them), our clothing (can you say reclaimed materials and fair wages??), who and how we pay for services (cash is always king, credit card companies don’t need our money)...the daily actions we take and dollars we spend have SUCH an impact on the world around us. You don’t need to be an activist, marching out on the street to change your community, something as simple as where you buy your daily coffee can have a positive ripple effect that goes further than you’d at first imagine. Rub a dub dub, is that a cow in the tub?! Aside from its multitude of glorious skin benefits, using tallow from animals raised on small, local, regenerative agricultural focused farms, pastured & humanely raised, is one of the most eco conscious ways we can source ingredients. Large scale farming of crops such as palm, soy, coconut, (and yes, even large scale factory farmed cattle) strip the soil of nutrients and decimate native animal habits and ecosystems. By putting the ta...llow from these small, ecologically focused operations to good use, we are helping to maximize energy spent on production, using every last bit, with the ultimate goal of little to no waste. Food production is a difficult job, and we are very thankful to the farms, processors, animals, and plants who contribute to providing for us, and wish to honor them by appreciating and utilizing every last nugget we can. 4 years ago I spent Election Day traveling for 25 hours for the first time to a place that would instantly feel like home. It’s been a busy install week transforming our space at the @mercantileatdoylestown in the old Bon-Ton, and we’re almost ready for you to see it! Bathtub gin runs deep with my kin. I found out last year my Nanas parents made their living as moonshiners (I’d thought til then they were farmers, which in a sense they were, since they grew the corn for the ‘shine themselves). I suppose in a way I’m inadvertently carrying on the family tradition when I make this soap using spent botanicals left over after @bluecoatgin distilling process.
