CARES community - I need your help. Please join me in recruiting students to become immigrant advocates. We desperately need more help assisting asylum seekers and other migrants. VIISTA is an online, asynchronous program that takes 10-15 hours a week and teaches what I taught you all in CARES and more. Now, I am aiming to expand access to justice by building a movement. I am certain that you know people who are outraged that children appear in immigration court without... an advocate, people who want to use their skills and privilege to assist asylum seekers and their families. Students range from college seniors to retirees, and include educators, social workers, gap year students, prospective law students - and everyone is learning together in community. I love teaching this course! please help me by spreading the word about VIISTA in your networks and encourage friends and family to join me in improving the lives of immigrants and their families. https://www.chronicle.com//most-asylum-seekers-have-no-leg See more

CARES Community - we need your help to fight back against proposed asylum rules that will eliminate asylum as we know it. On June 15, 2020, the Trump administration published proposals to fundamentally change our asylum system, denying protection to the vast majority of survivors of persecution who seek safety in the U.S. See Philip Schrag, https://thehill.com//immi/502881-the-end-of-asylum-for-now. WE HAVE UNTIL JULY 15 to speak out against these changes by submitting PUB...LIC COMMENTS. The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) has provided more information, and a template comment that you can personalize and submit through their platform, or you can draft your own comments. Attached are materials about submitting comments on regulations, a summary of the proposed rule, and samples comments filed on another set of proposed regulations (on fees). Note, your voice needs to be heard. Your comments can be as short as a few paragraphs or as long as some of these samples. The important thing is to act, in any way you can, and do it now. If you'd like to learn more: On June 26 at 2 PM: CLINIC is holding a training for more information about how to write your own comments. Register here, https://cliniclegal.org/training/webinar/AsylumAtRisk062620 On July 10 at 3 PM and July 12 at 1 PM, CARES is hosting virtual community-building comment-writing sessions to provide more information, answer questions, and support each other in writing comments. Please use this form to register, https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSc4FPv_lkjMROWALE/viewform Also, please involve your networks in this fight. Forward this email, post on social media, start a movement! The time is now to act! Thanks to every one of you! I know that our community can make an impact in fighting back against these dreadful efforts.
