Congratulations to Dr. Cindy Hambach who had a successful dissertation defense yesterday with her study "Using Standardized Patients in Simulated Learning Experiences to Develop Clinical Judgment and Clinical Competence of Baccalaureate Nursing Students in a Foundations in Nursing Course." Her dissertation chair was Dr. Mary Ann Cantrell and Dr. Bette Mariani was her committee member. She is our 94th PhD graduate! We wish Dr. Hambach continued success in her scholarship and specifically look forward to seeing her dissertation study reported in several publications! #villanovanursingphd #villanovanursingresearch

My name is Ariana, I am a Puerto Rican and Colombian and a student here at Villanova in the BSNExpress program. Recently, I have joined Dr. Linda Maldonado's research project that works with a community of Puerto Rican women in Kensington Philadelphia. I am excited to be connecting with a local Hispanic community during my time here. I hope that incoming Hispanic students will consider getting involved with research and pursuing coursework in STEM or a career in nursing. It's so important that we are represented in all these fields and that we are represented in academic literature! Happy #HispanicHeritageMonth, you belong here! @nahnnursing #villanovanursingresearch

Tony Garcia ’19 BSN * IMC Transplant RN * Johns Hopkins Hospital As a freshman, I heard about Dr. Linda Maldonado’s Team Latina project. A Puerto Rican mother herself, Dr. Maldonado was interviewing Puerto Rican mothers in Philadelphia to understand why Puerto Rican babies have the least favorable survival rates in the first year among Hispanics and develop an intervention to improve this. Her research really spoke to me because I am half Puerto Rican and know that there wer...e many complications during my mother’s pregnancy with me. The research I completed under the mentorship of Dr. Maldonado throughout my 4 years at Villanova helped me understand challenges in the Hispanic community as well as finding my voice in meeting those challenges. This research expanded my worldview to an extent that has significantly improved the quality of care I give as a bedside nurse. I still carry that commitment to improving health disparities in my everyday practice and the most fulfilling feeling I’ve experienced at the bedside is being able to provide a sense of peace over Hispanic patients because I can be someone who turns their hospital experience into something a little bit more familiar for them. This proved to be especially true from February to June when we cared for patients affected by COVID-19 who were mostly Hispanic. Furthermore, understanding the impact of cultural and language barriers has made me more aware of obstacles that many patients face beyond the Hispanic community. My next steps as I enter my second year of nursing are to become involved in Centro Sol, an outreach program benefitting the LatinX community of Baltimore. If you share a commitment to social justice and the betterment of health for all I highly encourage you to get involved in research in the Fitzpatrick College of Nursing. I didn’t know where my journey would take me or what I would learn along the way, but what I did know was that I felt called to help people just like me. You don’t have to look far to ignite change. What I’ve learned is that you can make a big difference in the world by being there for the people you interact with in a daily basis. #HispanicHeritageMonth National Association of Hispanic Nurses
