Look how they've grown! Hans, Franz, and Nataliya were part of a humane case after being abandoned in unsanitary conditions, four months ago. Still nursing, Nataliya and her babies were put into a loving foster home until they were ready for adoption. Hans and Franz, a bonded pair, were lucky to go home together! Seen here in their adopted home, they are happy, healthy, and thriving! Beautiful Nataliya is still waiting for her furever home. She is a two-year-old, tab...by, with sass and class! She is looking for a family with patience who will give her time to adjust and feel comfortable in a new home. She loves to run around and chase toys, and if you can catch her, she is known to enjoy belly rubs! She has a good time playing with the other cats, but can become startled at loud noises. Nataliya's ideal home would be one with other kitty furiends and older children. If you are interested in meeting the spunky Nataliya, please call the Cat Department at 724-222-PETS ext. 105! *Update* Maddie is still looking for a forever foster. Please keep sharing! Meet our sweet and lovable Maddie! She is an eight-year-old, Siberian Husky mix, looking for a forever foster home. Maddie was rescued by our Humane Officer, after spending her entire life outside on a chain. Our Humane Officer discovered she was lethargic, underweight, and had a severe mammary tumor on her underside. She knew she had to get her medical help right away. She was brought to the WAH...S where our medical team jumped into action to do all they could for Maddie. She was treated for an infection and once her blood levels were stabilized, she received surgery to remove the mass. The surgery was successful, and Maddie is bouncing back! Unfortunately, after a biopsy, it was determined that her cancer will continue to spread. We are looking for a hospice foster, where she can spend the rest of her days in the comfort of a home. Her medical care and any other necessities will be supplied by the WAHS. All we want is for this sweet girl to receive the love and comfort she truly deserves while she still can. She is a staff favorite and frequently spends time visiting different offices and taking naps. She is a curious girl who loves to be by your side, and still enjoys a short, daily walk. Maddie’s preferred foster home would be a quiet one. After a careful assessment by our trainer, it was determined she cannot be in a home with any other pets. Due to her medical condition and the current healing process, she requires a foster home with older/adult children. If you are interested in opening your home to Maddie’s big heart and beautiful blue and brown eyes, please contact our Foster Coordinator at 724-470-9708 or [email protected].

We are so glad Katie decided to volunteer with us to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award! She collected blankets, toys, treats, and food for our animals at the shelter. She also spent time on her sewing machine making homemade pillow beds and blankets for the kennels. Katie’s main focus of her project was researching what a new adopted shelter animal needs in their home along with creating pamphlets with advice on how to make that transition easier on a new pet. Thank you, Katie, for your hard work and congratulations on earning your Silver Award! Interested in volunteering to complete a Girl Scout project at the WAHS? Contact [email protected] to get started. All completed Girl Scout projects come with a complimentary WAHS Girl Scout patch.

WAHS Resident Spotlight: Lucy We are so excited to introduce you to Lucy! This beautiful girl is a 9-year-old Shepherd mix. Lucy made her way to WAHS through no fault of her own. Upon intake, our medical team quickly noticed that Lucy was suffering from severe allergies, causing her skin to be dry, itchy, and painful. Since being at WAHS, Lucy’s skin has begun to heal. She receives daily medication, weekly baths, and has been placed on a limited ingredient diet. Because we... want to continue monitoring Lucy’s skin, she is looking for a foster to adopt home. Our team at WAHS has fallen in love with Lucy! She is super sweet and loves everyone she meets. Lucy can be a girl on the go, but she also enjoys nap time. Lucy is hoping that her forever family will allow her to be the only animal in the house. She loves attention and we think she deserves all of it! Her foster to adopt home must be one without children under 10 years of age. If you are interested in meeting Lucy and falling in love (we promise you will!) please call 724-222-PETS (7387).

WAHS Resident Spotlight: Ruby Everyone, meet Ruby! Ruby is on a mission to find her furever home. At nine-years-young, Ruby found her way to WAHS through no fault of her own. This sweet lady is full of hope and excitement and feels that 2021 will be her year! Ruby not only has looks, but she’s also got brains. Ruby follows commands and is housebroken. She is eager to please and learns new things quickly. Ruby LOVES to talk. When our team at WAHS walks by Ruby, she catches th...em up on her day and is quite chatty, especially when she knows she is about to go on a walk. While she may have been let down by people before, Ruby is ready to trust again and hopes that her next family will be committed to her forever. She is looking for a place where she can feel safe. While Ruby loves going for walks, she also LOVES to take naps. A comfy couch would be a plus! Ruby may be opened to dog siblings but would like to meet them before going home. Because Ruby is VERY independent, she would do best in a home with an older, calmer dog. Ruby’s perfect home would be one without children under 10 years of age. All of us at WAHS are crossing our fingers that Ruby finds her perfect home! If you feel like Ruby would be a good fit for your family, please fill out an adoption application (http://www.washingtonpashelter.org/adoption-application) or call 724-222-PETS (7387).

Meet our handsome boy Penguin! He is a two-year-old, 68-pound, male, Border Collie mix. Penguin came to us as a stray. He can be nervous around strangers at first but wouldn’t anyone if they came to a new place? Penguin loves going outside for walks and playing in the snow! He would love to go to his fur ever home with someone who loves exercising and going on daily walks. Penguin would love to have an adopter who has a home that he can run around in. He loves when people are around! Penguin may benefit from crate training to make him feel safe when he is alone. He loves butt scratches and affection. Penguin would need to meet any dogs he would be going home with. He would do best in a home with no kids under 15.

Meet Nova! She is a one-year-old, Shepherd mix who was found as a stray. We learned quickly that this girl has a big, wonderful, playful personality! She loves to play fetch, run around the play yards, and give lots kisses all over your face. Her credentials include: professional squeaker finder in all things plushy and expert wiggler when receiving affection. Nova would love to have another dog to play with in an active household with daily walks for exercise. She would do best in a home without small children under 6.

Meet Duke! Duke is a big love bug. He is a seven-year-old, 95-pound, male, Labrador Retriever mix. Duke was surrendered to us for no fault of his own. He loves to play with toys like plush and rubber balls. Even though he is seven, he has a lot of life left to live. Duke loves to go outside and explore. He would love a calmer household where he can be a couch potato but still go for walks around the neighborhood. Duke loves to talk to you especially when he gets to go for a walk. He would love to meet any potential companions he would be going home with. Duke would do best in a home with no kids under 10.

Everyone can use a feel good story during these difficult times. This one was worth sharing Yesterday at the end of day we received a call from a concerned citizen, Cali , of Washington County regarding a cat possibly trapped in a wall or roof of an apartment building she was actively moving out of. This building was surrounded by row style buildings that are partially abandoned. She could hear the cat crying but had no way to get to it and was unsure where it actually was. ...After many unsuccessful attempts to get people to help Cali had no idea what she should do, so she reached out to WAHS and we responded and directed the call to WAHS Humane Society Police Officer, Maranda Coombs. This situation didn’t qualify as an abuse, abandonment, or neglect case, but we felt we could at least try to assist since it was a dire situation. The temperatures would drop shortly and the cat would not make it through the night stuck. Our HSPO was willing to help after hours and met up with Cali at the site. Meanwhile, Cali had posted for help on a Facebook community page about the ordeal and two kind hearted community members came to assist as well. Just like Cali said, our HSPO could hear the cat but not see it and realized it must be stuck between the two buildings. Maranda got permission from code enforcement and the building’s owners to access the roof of the property. She called long-time friend Jeff Riternoir, owner of J&J Remodeling, Inc. , to come with a ladder and assist. Jeff went up on the roof but the cat had fallen from the roof and was stuck down a story between the two buildings. It had no way out or up because it was such a far drop off. Since they couldn't get down to the drop off, they gained access to the building and after getting inside they went to the 2nd floor. Jeff almost fell through, so they came back down and went through a boarded up window in a stairwell. That is when they realized they were level with where the cat was stuck. Jeff then crawled out into the small space where she was stuck and got her out and brought her back to Maranda and Cali. They wrapped her in a blanket and brought her to safety. Cali is caring for the cat and it is healthy and doing well. WAHS offered to take the cat in to adopt out, but Cali had made plans to transport her to Ninth Life Rescue Center in Greensburg today. The cat is most certainly thankful that a handful of strangers came together to save its' life. Although the cat was homeless, its life does matter and it is so heart-warming to know that people can come together and use their compassion and critical thinking to save a life. The greatness of a nation can be judged by how it treats its weakest member - Ghadi #washingtonareahumanesociety #WAHS #voiceforthevoiceless #adoptdontshop #animalrescue
