Happy October Birthday to all of our friends!!! Opal is the official birthstone for October...but we will also introduce you to the secondary stone pink tourmaline later in the month. So stay tuned! Opal is arguably the most unique, diverse, and beautiful birthstone. Unlike most gemstones, opal is amorphous which means it does not have a defined crystalline structure. It takes on many shapes and colors and in that way, it is pretty unpredictable.... Opals rank 5.5 to 6.5 out of 10 on Mohs Scale of Hardness. They are certainly more fragile than the other birthstones, so you do need to be careful with them. However, with proper care, they should hold up well. Opals metaphysically symbolize purity and hope. It has been regarded as a protective stone, as it keeps the wearer from harm. Opal is a great gift for your loved ones born this month. Who knew that Opal has been found on Mars! It is one of only a handful of gemstones that have ever been discovered outside of our planet (the other gemstone being Peridot - that’s found from outer space). Here on earth, Australia produces around 95% of the worlds opals. So, if you too are unpredictable and born in October - this is your stone! Let Your Jewelry Connection be your stop for something special. Ps. Come back soon to hear about the beauty and wonder of Pink Tourmaline!

Celebrating a birthday this September? Surprise yourself or a loved one with the gift of sparkling sapphires, the breathtaking September birthstone. Sapphire is regarded as one of the five cardinal gemstones, with a history as vibrant as its brilliant blue color. There’s more to this precious stone than meets the eye... so read on! Sapphire gets its name from two ancient terms: the Greek word sappheiros, and the Latin word sapphirus, both of which mean blue. Tho...ugh blue is certainly the most popular color of sapphire, this glittering gemstone comes in a variety of hues: pink, yellow, green, purple, and even white. Sapphires are considered an ancient treasure. During the Middle Ages, sapphire was used to protect a wearer from evil. Sapphire has historically been associated with royalty and nobility. With such a rich history, sapphire has adopted many meanings over the centuries, as one might expect. Second only to diamond, sapphire is considered the most durable gemstone available. Earning a score of 9 on Moh’s Scale of Mineral Hardness, sapphire is relatively resistant to scratching and chipping, making it ideal for jewelry. Peridot is August's birthstone, aligned with the zodiac sign of Leo It is one of only a very few gemstones that only come in one color. Peridot is always clear, bright green to yellow-green. Shades range from lime to olive. ... Peridot is a French word derived from the Arabic word faridat, which translates to gem. Peridot has a hardness of 6.5 7 on the Mohs Scale, which makes it slightly softer than quartz. For more than two millennia, peridot has been associated with light. It’s believed that the Egyptians were the first people to mine this golden-green gem on the volcanic Red Sea island of Topazios. According to legend, the island was infested with dangerous snakes, but the Egyptians drove them into the sea in order to mine peridot - the hidden treasure. The ancient Egyptians called peridot the sun gem, believing it had fallen down from the skies. It stands for clear thinking and a good heart and symbolises light. Peridot is a gem full of positive energy. Legend has it that peridot elicits positive energy and suppresses selfishness, jealousy and ego. Because of this, it is believed that it aids in the success of personal relationships including marriage. It is also believed to be able to ward off evil spirits. What a fascinating birthstone you August babies have - enjoy it and enjoy your special day!

Happy Birthday July Babies! Rubies, because of their brilliant red hues, are often related to themes concerning the essence and vibrancy of life. If there is one gemstone that represents the passion of love, it is the ruby. The word ruby comes from the Latin rubens which means red. Rubies are found in shades of red, from rich darkish red to pigeon blood red and... pinkish red. The red hue comes from traces of the mineral chromium. Measuring at number 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, rubies are the hardest stones after diamonds. Since rubies were first discovered, they've been shrouded in folklore and superstition. One of the most enduring of these myths suggests that the rare stone possessed healing and protective powers. Throughout the medieval period, belief in the protective qualities of rubies persisted, and many Europeans wore them to guarantee health and wisdom. Many rubies glow when exposed to daylight. The effect of this red gemstone is not a result of their reputed mystical properties; rather, rubies contain high amounts of chromium, which gives them their saturated red appearance. Under UV light, this chromium causes rubies to appear to glow from within. This unusual quality is unique to rubies and certainly adds another dimension of beauty and intrigue to this highly coveted and rare stone. So get glowing on your birthday July babies!
